From School Library Journal
An anthology of short, personal essays by first- and second-generation immigrants or members of marginalized communities, most of whom are celebrated actors, activists, authors, and athletes. Ferrera (of Ugly Betty and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants fame) starts the collection with a breezy entry on the origins of her name and the microagressions, and even overt racism, that it has inspired over the years. Most of these pieces discuss the awkward and difficult in-between spaces the contributors have often occupied, mostly involuntarily, because of their family's country of origin or place in the majority white United States. The selections range in length and topic, touching on first crushes, holiday celebrations, intergenerational clashes, financial struggle, religious observance, and more. What unites these short works is the inherent pride in being part of "America," but also the acknowledgement that this nation often fails to live up to the promise of its founders. Teens will find lots to connect with, as many of the entries focus on childhood, coming of age, and the growing pains that accompany adolescence and identity formation. VERDICT A strong selection where anthologies and personal essay collections have a readership; a good choice for supplementing civics courses.-Shelley M. An absolute must for well-rounded collections." —Library Journal (starred review)“[T]his beautifully woven collection of memoir essays... gifts readers with intimate glimpses of contributors' private lives, rife with admiration for immigrant parents and pride in cultural backgrounds, along with the frustration and anguish that come with feeling like an outsider in their own country.” —Booklist (starred review)“Heartfelt essays from vibrant American voices.” —Kirkus Reviews"You know some of the writers already (hello, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Issa Rae), but their voices give powerful insight into the lived experiences of so many." —Glamour“The essays are heartfelt reminders that our country has been great for a while now.” —O, The Oprah Magazine"Wide-ranging and heartfelt, this timely collection is quintessentially American." —Book Riot“[T]he essays paint a moving portrait of diversity and belonging.” —PEOPLE Magazine"Filled with gems. … From some of the biggest stars in art and entertainment come funny, touching and complicated reminders that the word ‘American’ is wonderfully and endlessly undefinable." —USA Today"In a timely and compelling discussion, Olympic athletes, politicians, writers and actors reflect on their varying heritage and American identity." —Shelf Awareness"Even though this anthology speaks to the American experience, the themes of belonging and identity will hit home for anyone who’s ever felt torn between two cultures or two places equally dear to them." —Esquire.com

I just received this book yesterday and am only a few chapters in, but I cannot put it down! As a woman who has questioned her own culture identity for years, America's introduction resonated deeply with me. With each story that follows, I continue to be engaged by the lessons, hardships and knowledge the contributors have experienced throughout their own cultural journeys here in the US. This is an eye-opening, must read!
I just got this book today and I CAN’T PUT IT DOWN! This is bringing back so many memories I had as a young girl. I identify through so many of these stories. Thank you America for having the courage to believe in yourself despite what people told you. I can’t wait to start gifting this book to people!
There isn't enough literature out there that talks about what it is like to live between two cultures. This book has a variety of different essays from entertainers, comedians, and other famous individuals on fitting into the American culture and keeping their ties to their backgrounds. Within all of the essays, there is a common theme of being proud of who you are and where you came from. Highly recommend reading, some of the essays are light and short reads.
This timely book includes key life stories of prominent contemporary Americans of different ethnic and racial backgrounds. Each personal account tells how the individual overcame the experience of "apartness" to eventually contribute to the unfolding story of American life.
It was refreshing to read the stories of so many Americans whose life experiences are so relatable to plenty of us stuck between cultures
This is a great compilation of the voices and experiences of people who are uniquely American, some very well-known. The essays are truthful, enlightening and encouraging. My main takeaways are admiration and hope for the future of our country. The struggle is worth it.
The ability to share such personal stories makes this audiobook a perfect companion
This is a collection of people's experiences in America. A lot of them are very familiar to me, as I have brown skin as well, but a ton of it was new and eye opening. This is easy to get through and will help you understand those around you more deeply. Highly recommended.
