Cute book. Our 4 year old granddaughter loves to read this book. Even our 2 year old grandson knows some of the words (I thinkhe looks at the pictures and then knows what to say.

I like this book because it has simple sentences and perfect for the learning reader. There's maybe 50 (?) words total but they get repeated for memory and retention. Unlike other "level 1" books, this one is well done for the early reader.

My emerging reader loves the book!

It’s a very easy read for new readers, my 5 year could easily read this story and he enjoyed it very much!

Cute short story. Perfect for a beginner reader.

Grandson loved it!

I love this book! It was perfect for our study of guppies and goldfish.

Great book for 5 year old! He thought it was so funny

The House of Morgan is truly one of the best written and most interesting histories I’ve read. The strong secondary subject matter is the economic, political and diplomatic history of the United States (circa 1870 to the late 1980s), which actually takes primary stage for much of the book. Chernow had full access to an historical treasure trove of Morgan documents relating to their dealings with U.S. Presidents, nefarious dictators, various and sundry “robber barons,” the Federal Reserve bank, the Bank of England, Continental and Asian state banks, a wide spectrum of politicians from Japan, China, Europe, Mexico and South America — let alone the United States, Charles Lindberg, and a slew of other unusual personages. At its core, it’s a history of high finance, but Chernow’s mastery weaves what could be dry subject matter into the “movement and tension of an epic novel,” to quote the NY Times.

I must admire Chernow's resolve to research his subjects so thoroughly. This was my second go-around after Titan. These books have tremendous value as insight into the times and thoughts of the world's first Corporate Titans. However, both books, but this one in particular is tremendously difficult to read. I find myself labouring through each chapter, midway through and not enjoying the experience. I look back and have learned a great deal, but it was an incredible pain to get there.

This wasn’t my favorite of Ron Chernow’s books but it is well researched. There was more detail than I really wanted to know. I loved the other three books I read that he wrote—Hamilton, Washington, and Grant—I highly recommend those. If you want to know all about banking and JP Morgan then this book is worth reading.

a long book and a very interesting and helpful one from the aspect of understanding how world politics and events were shaped by the financial side - especially the influence of one dominant family - and a dominant person within that family. As all Chernow books, well researched and reasoned. My favorite of his: Titan - the John D. Rockefeller biography. Clearly he has a financial penchant. The book stops in the late 80's - so you can only wish for an updated view of the merger with Chase Bank and the role of the bank in the Great Recession and its current compliance problems. Ron, how about an update??

The book is fascinating and has aged well (written ±30 years ago!). The parts that cover the 19th century through about world war II are fascinating and unmissable. The latter parts towards the end of the book, seem to be written out of necessity because the book had to cover the whole history of the bank. I believe a later more experience Chernow would have had the wisdom to stop earlier and make a more compact book.As it stands, the good parts are great, for their context about how massively powerful Morgan was, and the beautiful historical anecdotes included.

The House of Morgan is an stand-out history of modern finance, told as the story of one of America's great banking families. It tells the story of the shift of the epicenter of global finance from London to New York City and should serve as a reminder to we Americans that that epicenter is not fixed and can shift again.Morgan was a powerful man. During the 1907 Panic he put NYC's bankers in a room and forced them to save the city and its banking system. A decade later it would be the federal reserve, not any banker, with that power. Even during the Great Depression, partners at J.P. Morgan made a million dollars a year. J.P. Morgan himself was shockingly cash poor (much of his wealth was in art) compared to his fellow robber barons, but those robber barons relied on him for capital, the lifeblood of all businesses. The dominance of J.P. Morgan was only broken by Glass-Steagal (this was by no means certain: FDR liked the big banks because of their internationalist bent and his fear of the power conservative small bank presidents had in small town politics). As someone who worked in banking during a youth mispent, I loved the window Chernow provides into the banking of yesteryear. J.P. Morgan was a conservative place to work, even for a banking house. In the halcyon days of the three-martini lunch, J.P. Morgan partners abstained at lunch. It was considered a career-limiting move to remove your suit jacket before entering the restroom. The House of Morgan is the first book I would suggest to anyone interest in the history of American finance and one of a few I would suggest for economic history. As in all of his books, Chernow shows off an impressive vocabulary. He uses the words correctly and fruitfully, but you may benefit from keeping a dictionary handy.

Gone: Catastrophe in Paradise by OJ Modjeska is the real story of the worst aviation accident in history. The Canary Islands, a popular tourist location for both American and European tourists in the late 1970s has just been rocked when its major airport was bombed by a separatists group seeking to gain independence from the Spanish who had been in control of the island chain for a long time. The decision was made to divert all air traffic to a small regional airport nearby when the threat of another bombing was made. An overwhelmingly large number of large planes then began to land and circle the small, understaffed, and ill equipped airport. To add to the mayhem, a thick fog rolled into the area which drastically cut down on the visibility of both the pilots and the air traffic controller. The stage was set for an easily avoidable, yet horrible accident to take place. This is the true story of that accident. There are several things that I really enjoyed about this novella. First, it is short and gets right to the heart of the issue. Many times nonfiction gets bogged down with unnecessary discussions of small details. This one sticks to the main points and keeps on going. Second, it has been well researched and presented in a way that is easy for the reader to understand, enjoy, and learn from. Third, it brings to light an accident that many in the aviation field are aware of but most average people have no knowledge of. I really like it when an author takes the time to shine a light on a small forgotten part of history and make the reader aware of its importance. Excellent read.

A word or two about the feeling that captured me while I was reading this book.It is a distinct feeling of uneasiness and powerlessness that something very bad is about to happen because hints are everywhere. It has nothing to do with the book intro I read before. I can illustrate a similar feeling creeping up when I was watching the cult horror “The Ring” - I sat at the edge on my sofa in the same position until the end. I almost went through the same process when turning the pages of this fact-packed and detailed overview of what really happened on Tenerife in 1977. I am too young to remember the real event but it is not necessary because this somber depiction of human erring and individual personalities will get to any flier, meaning - to anyone.OJ Madjeska’s writing is carried with a powerful news reporting style, but it so much more than a chronicle. The author tries to stay away from finding culprits, using the Rashomon effect to give details about the series of unfortunate mishaps that brought together the unforeseen catastrophe. Having all those ill-fated circumstances all at once, including the airport technical set up, an act of terrorism and human frailty, one could actually ask:”What can not go wrong”?In the end, sadness grips: once the pride of aircraft industry, top pilot professionals and over 500 travelers looking for the holiday of the lifetime disappear into ashes. A precious gain from such a tragedy would be, as expected, improved airline safety. And still, the author states, even 40 years later, the heterodyne effect complicates airline communication.Airlines, get to that da*n heterodyne! It seems there is a simple solution to it!

My original title for this review (but ditched, too long!): Suspenseful, yet familiar...creates a suffocating sense of coming doom for the characters, then you remember: it's a true story!I was intrigued by the "teaser" (and also the title) for this book: "One fine afternoon on a sun drenched island hundreds of lives are destroyed...a true story." I wondered: tsunami? terror attack? a case of mass, very serious failure of sunscreen resulting in the death of hundreds of beachgoers? As it turned out, after a few pages I realized I was familiar with the topic: teen memories of my parents/maternal aunt talking about it at the time, plus images of TV news that evening and the following days; and even a somewhat recent "air disaster" type program I watched on Netflix. The book concerns the "Tenerife airport disaster," still ranked as the deadliest accident in aviation history (I promise, no spoilers beyond this, and in fact the writer spells out the subject matter in the prologue).I happen to be one generation removed from Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands: my maternal grandmother was born/partly raised there (along about 1900, later she immigrated to Cuba, where I was born).Despite my familiarity with the subject, I found this book quite well executes a challenging dilemma: when the reader knows the end-result (for example, the JFK assassination or the sinking of the Titanic), how does the writer create a captivating, even suspenseful narrative?True, in this case most readers may not know the end-result, but again, the writer mentions it early on. Modjeska takes the same tack as Alfred Hitchcock famously stated as the recipe for suspense: scenario 1: diners at a table, one steps away, then suddenly a bomb explodes, all are dead save the one; or 2: first, we are shown a bomb under the table, with a clock on it ticking towards zero...then, the camera rises to diners at a table, one steps away, the camera returns under, shows us the ticking bomb again, now the timer nearer to zero, the camera rises to the diners again, the laughter, the camaraderie, etc., then suddenly the bomb explodes, all are dead save the one (suspect? lucky?), and we find we have been tightly holding onto our seat, our lover's hand, or our TV remote as the suspense built...suddenly released (fyi, this is all from memory, but accurate, save perhaps for the one diner walking away (?).Hitchcock termed the first scenario as nothing but shock and gore (as most horror/suspense movies are nowadays, so-called "slasher films")...the second scenario as the heart of suspense. This writer, who I am not directly comparing to Hitchcock (after all this story is non-fiction/ a written narrative, not a film, etc.) nonetheless manages to engage in such suspense-building.Modjeska also takes a tack that may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I found satisfying: a sense of "fate" closing in on the soon-to-be-victims: the nature of randomness, probability, small incidents, human fallibility all contributing to or even directly causing the tragedy about to unfold. In addition, the author adds layers and details I was not aware of, despite my intermittent exposure over the decades to this story; for example, a bit about the much-lauded but now gone Pan American airlines' enlightened corporate culture (advanced by the standards of the 1970s; btw, is Pan Am back? I'd heard something about it being revived, I'll have to Google that).A slim volume, for sure....a quick read....perfect for a one-sitting or two-sitting read.I look forward to more from OJ Modjeska.
