From the Inside Flap

Ella Minnow Pea is a girl living happily on the fictional island of Nollop off the coast of South Carolina. Nollop was named after Nevin Nollop, author of the immortal pangram, * "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." Now Ella finds herself acting to save her friends, family, and fellow citizens from the encroaching totalitarianism of the island's Council, which has banned the use of certain letters of the alphabet as they fall from a memorial statue of Nevin Nollop. As the letters progressively drop from the statue they also disappear from the novel. The result is both a hilarious and moving story of one girl's fight for freedom of expression, as well as a linguistic tour de force sure to delight word lovers everywhere. *pangram: a sentence or phrase that includes all the letters of the alphabet

A story for our current times in America. Interestingly written in letters. This is the story of restrictions by idiotic people in power. It is the story of Ella who stays behind to fight the good fight against that idiotic restriction. It is also the story about how a restriction might not affect you personally at a particular moment but you find that that one restriction does affect you in the end - thus the importance of standing up, speaking out, and resisting that restriction. It's funny, poignant, and the verbiage is exquisite.

A very fun story that I ended up reading within a span of about 72 hours. The book takes an unsophisticated stab at social/political commentary, but primarily as a plot device and backdrop for the startingly beautiful prose. It never takes itself too seriously. The work is primarily an exploration of the robustness of the English language, pushing the reader to the limit of legibility by the end but never feeling like it's a chore. I think of it like Finnegan's Wake for non-literati like myself. I would imagine it would be a difficult read for a non-native English speaker.

The premise is just a little bit silly, but honestly the story itself is really fun so that's kind of a plus as well. It's clever and playful (with language and otherwise) and it was a very nice way to spent a few lunch breaks - overall I think it took about an hour and a half to read, but I read very quickly. The writing is really skillful, not just in how the story is put together or in the characters, but in the way that the author works so completely fluidly around the missing letters! The book is self-aware enough that the characters do note that their manner of speech would be considered strange elsewhere, but the way they write is perfect for the story being told - as it should be, considering they live in a made-up country! Things do get a little sad and tense towards the end, but that's only natural when you're telling a story about an overbearing government.Overall it was a nice diversion and I would recommend it to friends who have the language bug.

This was such a delightful adventure in vocabulary. This author knit new words together, found the most obscure words to fill spots left by fallen letters, and took the time to write out phonetic jumblings of words when few legible words were left. It was such a treat to read, and I’m really impressed - not just with the linguistic prowess, but also with the well-portrayed tension that comes of times when speech is censored.

The fictional island nation of Nollop reveres the written word. Founded as a tribute to Nevin Nollop (fictional creator of the "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" phrase), the islanders have a statue of Nollop and the fox/dog sentence on tiles written below it. But when the tile containing the "Z" falls off, it starts the idyllic island nations descent into a theocratic dictatorship that is really very depressing. The Council decrees that no word with a Z should ever be used again. Then other letters start to fall. The book is written as a series of letters to and from various islanders. It is a fascinating read, but gets dark quickly. Reader beware. BUT! It is very much worth the read.

I truly loved this book. It's clever, original, and brilliantly executed.Quick plot: Ella Minnow Pea lives on the island of Nollop, where the creator of the pangram sentence "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" is revered. Disaster strikes when letters begin falling over the monument to Nollop - the government, in a fit of bureaucracy to rival none, declares that if Nollop had wanted those letters to remain in the language, they would not have fallen from the monument. Therefore, the fallen letters will be banned from use in speech or written form, with draconian punishments meted out to those who offend - the first offence receives a warning; the second a choice or whipping or exhibiting in public stocks; the third banishment. The first letter to fall is z; surprisingly common once it's no longer allowed, but after all, not so great a loss. However as more and more letters fall, communications - and the remaining population of the island - become more and more strained. Eventually, the High Council - forced to rename themselves through the loss of 'C' - issue a proclamation: if a new pangram, shorter in length than Nollop's infamous sentence - can be found by a given deadline, all letter-related statutes will be reversed, and life can resume it's normal flow. It's a quirky idea; and brilliantly executed. As each letter falls, the author banishes it from his own arsenal of letters, so by the time the remaining poor citizens of Nollop are left with a mere five letters, so is Mark Dunn. It's a fun book, a quick read, and a darkly sarcastic satire on the abuses and misuses of government. I enjoyed it immensely.

Coming up with a score for Ella Minnow Pea made me scratch my head and go Hmmmmm. On the one hand, it was brilliant, creative, intriguing and fun. But on the other hand, it was a pain in the butt to read. I finally decided I enjoyed it more than I didn't, and the ending was a real hoot. I can think of some friends who would get a kick out of Ella Minnow Pea, and others who wouldn't get past the first couple pages. There is no sex or foul language, but I would advise trying a sample before buying.

Because I have always loved words - especially long, monosyllabic, mouth-rounding words, I quite enjoyed this book. However, inasmuch as words and letters are central to the movement of the story, the novel's important ideas about narrow-mindedness, intolerance, cruelty, and abuse of power in the name of fanaticism are cleverly presented and thought provoking in an unexpectedly delightful fashion. The retired educator in me applauds.

On the Way Home: The Diary of a Trip from South Dakota to Mansfield, Missouri, in 1894, by Laura Ingalls Wilder

From the Back Cover

In 1894, Laura Ingalls Wilder, her husband, Almanzo, and their daughter, Rose, packed their belongings into their covered wagon and set out on a journey from De Smet, South Dakota, to Mansfield, Missouri. They heard that the soil there was rich and the crops were bountiful -- it was even called "the Land of the Big Red Apple." With hopes of beginning a new life, the Wilders made their way to the Ozarks of Missouri.During their journey, Laura kept a detailed diary of events: the cities they passed through, the travelers they encountered on the way, the changing countryside and the trials of an often difficult voyage. Laura's words, preserved in this book, reveal her inner thoughts as she traveled with her family in search of a new home in Mansfield, where Rose would spend her childhood, where Laura would write her Little House books, and where she and Almanzo would remain all the rest of their happy days together.

I had enjoyed reading Little House in the Big Woods and Little House on the Prairie. On the Way Home is a bit different -- not stories but the actual diaries of Laura Ingalls Wilder on her and her husband's move to Mansfield, Missouri with their daughter Rose. I found this fun to read, along with Rose Wilder Lane's additional commentary. Fans should find this book indispensable.

Five stars because anything about Laura... is fascinating, and interesting, to continue with her life story. Looking at her life from an objective viewpoint, I wondered about some of her decisions, but at the same time those were not easy times and she took the best way she knew. I would like to own anything she has written including a new followup book, and I'll wait until the price is down on that one.

Frankly, because of my own history of having to move 1,000 miles away from my family and childhood home after marriage, this book made me sad in many ways. I kept wanting Laura and her family to go back to South Dakota, and live near the rest of her family. It took a lot of courage back in Laura's era to make such a move, knowing they might never see their family again. People couldn't hop on a plane and be somewhere the same day. It does show the devotion she had to her husband, and the life he chose for them....life was tough on the side of a mountain!

This was a very short book, but as a lifetime Laura ingalls wilder fan, it was worth reading. It provides an account of what happened after the end of "the first four years". However if you want something more in depth, you might want to try elsewhere.

A simple read, but even as an adult I greatly enjoyed Mrs. Wilder's descriptions and accounts. This book makes a great addition to any Little House lover's library.

I have read all the Little House Books. Now Laura is moving to Missouri.

Was excited to get this book it was 1 of 2 that I needed to complete the series. I have been looking for it to read to my grand daughter just like my grand mother had read to me.

A great Laura Ingalls book.

This book is interesting and colorful, and instructions are clear for making small wall hangings. The author talks a lot about how versatile this quilting method is, but he gives very little instruction for achieving varied outcomes when using his method. If you are interested in making small wall-hanging type quilts with home-dyed fabrics, you will probably enjoy this book. Although he mentions you can use a variety of fabrics other than home-dyed, his very large gallery of quilts does not help you see results from a variety of fabric choices. If you are more into lap sized quilts and larger, you are likely to be disappointed because he does not explain how to expand his technique to produce a larger quilt. However, I found online a harmonic convergence calculator that I hope will be helpful, as I would like to make a twin sized quilt using this method. I wish he had limited the large gallery and included some help on producing quilt sizes other than larger than wall hangings. Although I look forward to using the method to make a quilt, I have to say overall I am rather disappointed in the book.

I couldn't figure out how convergence quilts were made. When I got the book, I laughed cause they are strips cut at certain thicknesses. Ha. But the idea is genius. There's 3 projects in the book, plus a gallery and his story. The book has several examples and fabric suggestions. The quilts are stunning. I found the fabric online and ordered it. I was surprised how it's a relatively simple concept but the quilts are beautiful.I suggest keeping an eye out for fabrics for convergence quilts and getting the book and reading through it first. It's definitely my next project. I'm so pleased I bought the book.

Some quilting books show gorgeous quilts that you know you'll never make. The techniques are complex and time consuming, or the writing fails to give you confidence that you understand the steps involved. Perhaps it'd make sense if someone showed you just once... but the instructions are confusing.Ricky Tims avoids these pitfalls, with a book that is *incredibly* well written -- and yields brilliant results.Just how easy is this? I made my first convergence quilt top in two or three hours, while I was also watching a baseball game, using 4 fat quarters that I already had on hand. And I'm no quilting wiz.Since then, I've made two additional convergence quilts, and I'm sure to make several more (the holidays are coming, after all). As a quilting instructor pointed out, these are like potato chips, in that you can't stop at one. I've loved every quilt I've made, and so has everyone who has seen these quilts.Do note that the basic quilt is very small -- perfect for a wall quilt but not much more. I think you could create several of these as blocks to turn into a bed quilt, but you'd be on your own to do so. The quilt is so easy to make and I like the results so much that I am tempted to give it a try. This would be a great book for someone who is fairly new to quilting. I wouldn't suggest it as your very first book (you should do at least a few small traditional projects first), but the forgiving nature of the techique is sure to give you a quilt to be proud of. It's all straight lines, and despite the appearance of the quilt it has no complex piecing. What fun! Highly recommended.

I already had a copy of this book, but couldn't find it, so I got another. The directions are good and the pictures are inspirational. I had completed a convergence quilt years ago, and wanted to make another one.

This is an easily followed book. Pictures are great. While it isn't a long book, and basically shows one technique, it is a great technique and I'm looking forward to seeing how many variations I can make and how I can put my own spin on convergence quilts.

I made a quilt using the instructions in this book. His instructions were clear and easy to follow. Also, he has several examples in the book done by others which gives a wider range of views on how the fabric choices affect the outcome. That's useful in planning a users quilt project.

Great book with very detailed --but easy to follow instructions. I will ACTUALLY use this book--not just read and stow away. :)

The book was in good condition as listed. The patterns are easy to understand and the designs are beautiful. Glad I made the purchase.

The authors spend the first chapter of the book bragging about how much white people hate this book. It's not hard to see why since they clearly have a chip on their shoulder and an ax to grind. I hate racial politics and this book is a force-feeding of it.Honestly, people just need to treat each other with kindness and decency, but books like this promote division and distrust (even though they claim to do otherwise).

This was a required book for a grad course. Sue and Sue have great reputations for staying abreast of emergent topics in diversity and oppression. However, I was disappointed that there was no focus on multiracial individuals. The authors basically ignored the confusion and identity crises that multiracial people experience, and all of the proposed cultural development models were built on the assumption that an individual had some sense of racial/ethnic identity to begin with, which is not the case for many people, myself included. As one of only three racial minority students in my graduate cohort (which is a problem, in and of itself), I was really looking forward to this diversity course, and the book (and the course, overall) was a bit of a let down. I didn't dislike it, necessarily, I just felt that it was incomplete.

If this would not have been a REQUIRED reading for a grad course at an extremely leftist college, I would not have touched this book with a ten-foot pole. It literally pushes white privilege and racism, stating that every white person is racist whether they realize it or not. It forces white individuals to "realize" that they are privileged and racist. This could not be any further from the truth. This book made me very angry - I have no microaggression or racism towards any individual regardless of age, race, religion, etc. VERY POOR READ - VERY HARD TO READ. I wish colleges would not require such biased education material that hinders the mindset of individual students. My 4.0 GPA was almost hindered because of my strong feelings towards the writers' biased opinion of the white population. My professor told me on many occasions that my beliefs were "wrong" and that I needed to "open my mind." Leftist agenda and "molding minds" in college should not serve as a basis for learning how to handle biases and prejudices within the counseling world. Mind-molding and belief-changing SHOULD NOT be happening in college... PERIOD. A person should not change who they are or what they believe in order to be successful in life. #nonconformity - Stay strong and stay true to yourself fellow grad students.

I will be reading this again in the future. Sue and Sue opened my eyes to diversity. I am a white, straight, Christian male. I read this for a class. It made a positive impact on my personal views on racism, sexism, and other types of bias I might have. It also helped me understand some of the perspectives culturally diverse clients may bring to my table, and some ideas about how to handle my own work in light of these lerspectives.

The content of the book is very good, I have no complaints about that. It seems to be an accurate representation of how culturally diverse individuals feel about living in America. It was a required text for my Master's level Multicultural Counseling course. As far as I can tell the authors did an exceptional job on that end. The reason I'm giving this book 3 stars is because the book itself was poorly constructed, as in, the book was physically falling apart upon arrival. It seems the quality of this book is not very good. The pages on the few chapters were not even sewn into the spine of the book and I was constantly worried they were about the fall out. I bought this book new so I assume it would not be a problem. But to be fair, this was the cheapest option for buying the book new. I'm just concerned about the pages falling out every time I open it.

This is a great textbook. Derald Sue and David Sue have made EuroAmerican counseling their punching bag and have put the EuroAmerican counselors in America on notice that they are participating in racism, classism, sexism and who knows what else. I know I felt beat up by it. But I'm a better person for the knowledge. I don't have to be a counselor with a 50% rate of clients not returning after the first session, because I use microaggressions in my counseling.

Easy read. Class was split at first on whether they fully agreed or not with author. Leaving just a few at the end to still not agree, but acknowledge some value. Diversity is not the easiest thing to talk about, but this book is certainly on a higher level than some corporate 'diversity' training class. Many will have to learn, unlearn, or accept assumptions/that privileges exist. Straight up, main audience is the dominant-culture counselors than marginalized. He does address this and you'll see the book builds more than just validating those in the margin. Kinda pricey, yes, but I didn't regret its worth after the semester. It'll be on my work-shelf and I know I'll be referencing it for diverse clients.

A lot of bias in this book. Hard to read it.

Great Help.As a beginning writer I found it difficult to organize my writing into an efficient process.I was struggling with keeping my focus on one book at a time. This book is also an invaluable tool for developing a critical editing eye for your own work.

This book was for my step granddaughter who wants to be a writer like me. The instructions are simple and easy enough for a 16 year old to follow. I put together a pamphlet of lessons for her but this will be more helpful. Thanks.

I bought this book after reading Celebrity Authors' Secrets Celebrity Authors' Secrets: The World's Greatest Living Authors Reveal How They Sell Millions of Books. The Creative Writing Coursebook is perfect if you want to set up a writers' group or you want to run a creative writing class. It's full of great ideas and covers many aspects of writing such as: characterisation, plot, setting, editing and revision. I found it useful and liked the emphasis on using detail in writing.

The book is well organized, I've found it very helpful. I've been writing for six years and some of the ideas were new to me. And those that weren't, that have taken me years to realize on my own, were summarized neatly in this book.

Great help

its good

this is just what I have been looking for, a book that keeps me focused and disciplined to work on my writing everyday!

I have enjoyed the lessons in this book. It is full of wonderful assignments that have given me a new outlook on writing short stories, with its easy to read instructions of each assignment. The recommending of books to read is also an advantage that I found to be helpful.
