I am so thankful for this book. I am a long-time Buddhist and relatively new to a Twelve-Step program (Al-Anon). I guess anyone who is serious about the 12 steps knows it is a spiritual journey (not tied to any religion) but for me it was challenging to learn to ask a higher power for help. This book has been an insightful guide and I have highlighted so many powerful passages. The author refers to "the core addiction of control" and he says, for instance:"Hitting rock bottom is an experience of the ego. It is the point where the ego, the addicted self clinging to the illusion of control, can no longer maintain that illusion and is surrendered to the reality of powerlessness." Yes, this rings true for me and I suspect for many others practicing the 12 steps who know it is a difficult but tremendously rewarding journey. This book explains each step in its most essential form. It offers much valuable guidance no matter what your religious or non-religious background and takes you deeper into each step than you may have realized on your own.

I loved this book! I'm sober in AA for 37 years and have read many books about the illness and the recovery. I learned a lot from this book. I definitely recommend it to people in 12-Step programs.

A simple book that goes really deep very quickly. Written from the first person point of view it is clear that the author has a personal experience with addiction. We're reading this is in an 11th step Centering Prayer group to ground us for sharing. Just reading a few pages creates highlights and notes for ruminating later. The entire approach is very gentle.

This is one of the best recovery books I have ever read. It appeals to me as a spiritual person and a thinking person. It is intelligently written and very inclusive. I just can't say enough good about it. After years of working on codependency issues, this book gave me perspectives that were new and unexpected.

It's a different approach, which integrates multiple religious beliefs and suggestions. It questions the obvious, as it appears in the Big Book. Like Step 1 "powerlessness" versus Step 3 "so powerful we get to choose our own God". For me, it was interesting in reading the thought processes through the steps but too much digging up and analyzing something that is simple. It has merit but perhaps not for everyone.

Rabbi Shapiro is a good writer and tells his own story from his heart. I have admired his other books and have seen him speak several times. He always gives me insights and inspiration.

This book deepened my understanding of the 12 steps. It also reinforced my experience that the 12 steps are clearly a spiritual practice.

A spiritual boost to my 12-step recovery. The essence? "First of all," I have to "quit playing God." Rabbi Rami's book shows me how to do that with his philosophy, anecdotes and practice exercises for each of the twelve steps. I'm on my third reading and still learning!

4.5 out of 5 starsI confess I got this book solely on account of its cover. The creepy, black and white photograph of a (very children-of-the-corn looking) girl, standing stock still, staring directly at the camera, as if contemplating how best to eat your soul stood out like a corpse at a holiday party. And the title? How could I resist? I plucked the book from the shelves and brought it home. Then (as you already know, if you read my post from a few days ago), I got distracted (things were shiny), and the book languished on my shelf. Then low and behold, the book will soon be a movie--directed by Tim Burton no less--and I didn't even want to look at the previews without reading the book first.Miss Peregrine's is a young adult novel, but one that transcends the genre and is enjoyable even for those of us who have left high school far in the past. The best books in the genre (think Harry Potter) feature young adult leading characters and high school age problems, but also rise above the mundane to speak to the problems of a bigger adult world. The less enjoyable books in the genre (sparkly vampires *cough*) leave you wondering if you might have enjoyed the book when you were thirteen, but fairly confident you were never that insipid (though, obviously, all teenagers are insipid by nature).Miss Peregrine's is one of the better books in the genre. Following the death of his grandfather, sixteen year old Jacob finds out that the fairy stories his grandfather told him as a child--about a magical island inhabited by children with paranormal abilities--may not have been just stories after all. Jacob sets off to learn the truth about the island with its mysterious house of peculiar children, all watched over by a bird who smokes a pipe.The story is accompanied by photographs throughout the book, all black and white, with that particular creepy vintage vibe you get if you google search "scary Easter bunny". The pictures are all quite striking, and serve to add to the atmosphere of the book. When you learn that all these photos are actual vintage photographs (most unaltered), collected by the author, it adds to the creepy vibe (what were those people doing?) rather than detracts from it. The book is largely an adventure story suffused with all the creepy atmosphere an ancient, fog-shrouded island off the coast of Wales can deliver. There are a few scary/creepy/violent moments, but these are generally around the level of the dementors in the Harry Potter novels (as, after all, this is still a YA novel, creepy atmosphere not withstanding).In all, this is a great read, and a fine example of a YA novel not only accessible for adults, but enjoyable as well. The characters are interesting and generally well done, and the backdrops, first of Florida, and then the Island are fully realized and contribute well to the tone of the book. SPOILER FREE REVIEW - We are constantly encouraging our 11 year old to read more. Until recently she would only flip through magazines on occasion, or pick up a joke book with short one liners. It took a lot of prodding to get her interested in reading a novel. We would go to a bookstore and suggest dozens of books while trying to make each one sound as exciting as possible.This book was one of the first books SHE mentioned wanting to read on her own. We jumped in the car and raced off to the book store to see if we could capitalize on her "read all of the books mood" once she flipped through the book she was hooked in... inside the store! We wanted to order it on amazon, so we negotiated the two day wait for shipping with her by offering to buy buying all three books in the series. She agreed.Some people may have an issue with this book's language or somewhat sketchy subject matter being appropriate for children, but honestly... She is 11. It's nothing she hasn't heard by now. If I am completely honest- With as much effort as we have put into encouraging her to read over the years, if she asked us to buy her a copy of Helter Skelter I might seriously consider it. Mom might not, but I would.

From a sailing point of view, it offered much information not to be found without experience, and experiences were found, thanks to the information contained therein. I rarely do reviews as I'm not very good at writing them, but this book deserves another five star review. It sounds totally crazy, MPREG, aliens, MMF, a reality show set in a Supa-Mart, but honestly, it all works and I was completely sucked in. I have never read an MPREG book before as it just sounded silly to me, but when I heard that one of my favorite authors had written one, I had to give it a shot. And it worked. I always thought that MPREG was another way of not having women characters (a pet peeve, even when I read MM I like for there to be good women characters at least in the background), but in this book that isn't the case at all. Because Zoe, the main female, is awesome. I also don't generall read menages, but again, it works here.Others have already posted about the story line, so I'll just say that it was a terrific space romp set in a big box store with wonderful characters that made me love them. I get bored of women in romances who need saving and Zoe was a perfect heroine for me; although she needed some saving, she also saved a lot of others. And the guys were strong and full of feelings and bravery. The background characters were also fleshed out nicely and I enjoyed them as well.I've only read this author's MM books, but now I'll need to look into the rest of her catalouge. This was just a really fun read. Well written, strong story, fantastic characters, and a good wrap up.

This novel was so different from any other I have read thus far. I loved the concept of aliens being hooked on reality TV and the lengths that were taken to create their own version. The relationships between Zoe, Rowe and Kai were were cute and the unexpected aspect of perds and their personalities was comical. The anatomical differences between humans and Tantulans was depicted well. I thought the main detractions were that the world building and development of ancillary characters felt only partially developed. That being said, it is hoped a sequel is being considered.

BE does it again. She wrote a wonderfully exciting story with beautiful and sweet characters. I couldn't put the book down, I read it in one day and It's a 20-something chapter book. I won't give away any of the plot details but it is worth every penny you spend on it. (She even made male pregnancy seem totally normal and okay....which is just really weird :). )

This is an inventive sci-fi ish m/f/m story with just enough tension to keep the plot moving. The characters are interesting and enjoyable

Yes, you read that right so I’m just gonna go ahead and warn you now.There are girl parts in this book.Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let me tell you about this book.Have you ever been shopping at your local Wal-Mart and thought, “You know, one could actually live in this store.”? Yeah? Well so did a bunch of aliens from another planet. So much so they decided to create a reality television show based on this very thing.Our first MC, Zoe is a 27 year old schoolteacher who has only three months to live. You see, she found out recently she has an inoperable brain tumor. Zoe, being one who never gets into trouble, never takes risks or strays outside the norm, decides to have one last hurrah and books a trip to a tropical paradise for Christmas. She plans to relax on the beach, soak up some sun and possibly have one last fling before she dies. Finding at the last minute that she doesn’t have anything to read on the plane she runs out to her local Supa-Mart to pick up a trashy romance novel at three o’clock in the morning. Just a quick in and out and she’ll be back at home ready to leave for her trip.Yeah, right.Enter Kai and Rowe. They’ve been best friends since they were kids. Consummate party boys. Rowe is a big wig and Kai is his right hand man. Oh, and they’re also aliens. They’ve been sent by their producer to ‘play human’ in the newest reality show that has been sweeping their planet. But they have each been harboring a secret love for the other. Will Kai ever tell Rowe that he secretly wants in his pants but was afraid he was beneath Rowe’s station so he never tried? Will Rowe ever tell Kai that he’s been secretly in love with him since they were just boys? Stay tuned to find out.This book was chock full of delightful surprises. Seeing as how I’ve loved other books by Ms. Elsborg I expected to enjoy this one as well. What I didn’t expect to get was a book that might as well have been titled ‘Written Exclusively for Jenni Lea’. It had everything I like in a book. EVERYTHING. I had such a huge grin on my face the entire time I was reading - even during the girl parts! Because let me just tell you, even though I had to endure reading about girly bits Ms. Elsborg more than made up for it with the anatomy lessons. I mean, the things those aliens can do with their… MA GAWD!This is such a fun story! It’s an easy and enjoyable read. There’s action, adventure, and quite a bit of humor as well. It also has the most creative form of ‘knotting’ I’ve ever read. Plus! It has the one thing I love more than knotting. Can you guess what that is?For those of you who are worried this is not a true MMF, worry no more. While it is quite heavy on the female parts, there’s tons of hot man on man lovin’. Barbara did not disappoint!So, take a chance on this one. Don’t let those girl parts scare you off. You’ll miss out on a fun and exciting story if you do.Highly recommend.

The quite normal characters then find that they are unable to make phone or computer contact and strong metal blocks every entrance.We are aware that two of the customers are in fact men from another planet, who carry symbiotic life-forms which let them communicate by telepathy. These guys look normal but handsome and blend in with the rest. As the alarmed locals speculate on whether they are in a sinkhole or a reality show, the two guys know that they are actually on a spacecraft.Zoe has only a few months to live due to a medical condition and her first priority is the medical stores available. After that is secured she starts thinking that enjoying herself with a stranger might be a good way to spend her last days, especially if they are going to run out of air or food in here. She comes across as a strong individual.I really liked the way the group adapts and comes up with practical ideas, then goes so far as make a Christmas Day for themselves. As this is a romance we go along with Zoe having a fling with one of the off-Earth guys, but when she finds out that he's not quite as we'd expect, it does seem odd that a threesome suggests itself.So this is quite unpredictable and fun and the title Taking Stock is cleverly used. Anyone who can cope with all the adult romance action in the second half, and likes an unusual SF read, will enjoy this tale greatly.
