If you have ever been overwhelmed by variety while shopping for Tequila, this book is for you! After reading "Tequila 101" you will know exactly what you need and why you need it. Big thanks to the Tippling Bros. for sharing their knowledge and experience so that others can enjoy. The recipes offer so many flavor combinations there is sure to be a favorite for everyone and the stories they share are quite entertaining! If there are any Tequila lovers on your gift lists this is one they will LOVE! Nothing but good stuff here!!!

For someone who loves margarita... specifically a combination of tequila and any citrus this book will not disappoint you. We made several recipes from this book and they all taste authentic and so good. The only con is they have their own recipes for simple syrup and other condiments and most of ththe m only last 7 days in the fridge - a bit inconvenient.

I gave this book as a Christmas gift to someone who loves margaritas. We're both having such a fun time reading the recipes and stories in the book — it's the best! I didn't have high expectations for a cocktail cook book but the info is so interesting and helpful and it's fun to reference while making new drinks or just to read after dinner.

Love this book. I was pleasantly surprised to find that, not only do I have an arsenal of pretty kick-ass Mexican cocktail recipes at my disposal, I learned more than I ever thought possible about the history and varieties of Tequila and Mezcal. The recipes are fresh and sophisticated but totally accessible. Can't wait to work my way through all of them, now that I'm a bonafide expert on all things Tequila.Bonus: the book is beautiful and well-written. This would be a great gift along with a nice bottle of Tequila.

The first of hopefully many must have cocktail manuals from the world’s best beverage consultants. The duo who are consistently ahead of the game bring a whimsical yet informative book on the often under used and over-mixed Agave spirits and Mexican flavors. This is a modern textbook that shakes up the common exhausted recipes with fresh, spicy, and exotic libations. Bravo gentlemen!

I've made so many great drinks using this book. You can get creative with the recipes to modify them too... Especially if you have friends that don't drink.

This book has a lot of great ideas and recipes. As a heads up a lot of these drinks involve creating your own syrups, infusions, etc. Which is great and lends itself to further inspiration.

This is a well written guide to serving cocktails at a party. Very easy to follow directions.

Combines life, function, sensory experience, methods in a vivid description across 4 books. I found the work to be tangibly mind altering. I believe he successfully describes everything. I feel the work is immensely important and an experience that can trigger a much deeper intuitive sense of the relationships among things. Deep in my core, I think he is close to the truth but cannot reach it or express it fully. The evidence for me is the length of the work itself. I think that a more complete truth would be more acutely expressed. His work is about harmony and how you perceive it, describe it, and achieve it in the formulation of things in this world. This is the work's greatest strength and is highly attractive to those seeking to express and define harmony among things. I think this is also where it fails. I do not think conceptualized harmony as shown here is the full sum of the truth. As comforting an experience an ancient building is, I do not think civilization can evolve successfully under the philosophy expressed in this work. A timeless changeless form that evokes rest, peace, and an endless commune with nature may not be the proper measure of living. As attractive as those things sound.Rather, I think his work is a great conditioning tool. A tool to broaden aesthetic capacity. A concept building tool to expand awareness of form, function, and relationships among elements. He presents a wide discussion that attempts to situate science, reason, intellect, empirical thought, creative awareness, and philosophy into proper contexts. An exercise that will prove beneficial for thinking beyond and outside of these subject domains. On these basis and a few others, it is a huge transformation.I bought the books in 2009, it took me months to read and I have waited to write a review. I wanted to be sure of what I said about this important work. I lost my copies of the book during a move in 2013 and hope to one day gain a new set. I wanted it on the Kindle, but the books may be too large and the colorful photos may not translate properly. He has written a candidate for the design world's theory of everything.

This is a great book covering aspects of architecture that are often difficult to describe. Interestingly enough, the author seems to have a challenge describing many of those complicated states of architecture as he relates it to ‘life’. Although the translation of the subject gets lost at times, the ideas he has are invaluable.

Alexander’s way of seeing is the best description of how spatial relationships create meaning—how they create life—that I have come across. It anchors on centers and wholes: “When I think of them as centers, I become more aware of their relatedness … The flower is not made from petals. The petals are made from their role and position in the flower.” His concluding 15 fundamental properties identify “structural features which tend to be present in the examples which have more life, and tend to be missing in the ones which have less life.” Some of my favorites are levels of scale, local symmetries, and roughness.

I discovered Christopher Alexander around 1986 when I read A Pattern Language and The Timeless Way of Building. A Pattern Language was our guide in designing our strawbale house, built in 1997. I fell in love with him then, and these books simply increased my profound admiration for him and joy in his work.Christopher Alexander is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an architect, a builder, and the author of many books and technical papers. He is the winner of the first medal for research ever awarded by the American Institute of Architects, and after 40 years of teaching is Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. He trained in Physics and Mathematics at Cambridge and was part of the group of scientists who developed systems theory along with Herbert Simon. He has been investigating the interaction between science and architecture all of his life, and this beautiful four-volume work contains the results of his research.Although many of Alexander's ideas are subtle and require thoughtful reflection, the basic thesis of these four volumes might be stated: everything that exists contains "life," and the degree to which "life" is manifest in any particular can be "objectively" determined by probing one's "subjective" world.Book Four describes a new cosmology uniting matter and consciousness. In order for us to make the changes that will preserve and extend the beauty of the world (in the midst of trucks and prefab), we must change our world-view. As one reviewer said, Alexander gives us "an effective theoretical basis with which to combat the billboard." First he discusses the weakness of the present world-picture, listing its ten tacit assumptions. For example, tacit assumption 1 is: What is true is only the body of those facts which can be represented as lifeless mechanisms. He adds that this assumption has the offshoot assumption that value is subjective. He closes the book with eleven new cosmological assumptions, one of which is: Everything matters. Another: Whenever we undertake an act of construction we have the ability to make the world more alive or less alive, more harmonious or less harmonious. He says, "The idea, then, is that every part of our physical world is shadowed by this parallel domain of I-stuff, and that each part of our ordinary world, if it is given the right structure, will lift the flap or open the door, and give us a glimpse into that domain." (By "I-stuff" Alexander is hypothesizing that there is underlying all matter a "Ground" - single and personal.) He adds, "All the efforts I have made have, at their heart, just this one intention: to bring back our awe . . and to allow us to begin again to make things in the world which can intensify this awe."Christopher Alexander's tireless work, his brilliance, his humility, his humanity give me deep hope in a time when it is so easy to lose heart. These are books to be read slowly, savored. One reviewer suggested that this is one of the few works to be remembered 500 years hence. I suggest that it is one of the works to be read and absorbed now in order for there to be a 500 years hence for us.I have reviewed Books One, Two, and Three at their respective sites.

I LOVE this book. It is a treasure. Christopher Alexander's penetrating observations are deeply informed by an open heart. His writing is accessible, and his observations and conclusions profound.

As a total amateur, I have no design training. I am fascinated by architecture and design, but really only "know what I like". I read "A Pattern Language" when working on object oriented computer systems and find it fascinating - I still re-read it. So, when I saw this book, I was hoping that it would be interesting. It is way beyond interesting. It completely changed the way I look at the world. It deserves to be read carefully, slowly, savored. Alexander makes his work accessible to both architects and lay people alike.Bravo.Even with two kids in college, I am going to spring for book 2. Higher praise could not be given.

Cute book. Our 4 year old granddaughter loves to read this book. Even our 2 year old grandson knows some of the words (I thinkhe looks at the pictures and then knows what to say.

I like this book because it has simple sentences and perfect for the learning reader. There's maybe 50 (?) words total but they get repeated for memory and retention. Unlike other "level 1" books, this one is well done for the early reader.

My emerging reader loves the book!

It’s a very easy read for new readers, my 5 year could easily read this story and he enjoyed it very much!

Cute short story. Perfect for a beginner reader.

Grandson loved it!

I love this book! It was perfect for our study of guppies and goldfish.

Great book for 5 year old! He thought it was so funny

The House of Morgan is truly one of the best written and most interesting histories I’ve read. The strong secondary subject matter is the economic, political and diplomatic history of the United States (circa 1870 to the late 1980s), which actually takes primary stage for much of the book. Chernow had full access to an historical treasure trove of Morgan documents relating to their dealings with U.S. Presidents, nefarious dictators, various and sundry “robber barons,” the Federal Reserve bank, the Bank of England, Continental and Asian state banks, a wide spectrum of politicians from Japan, China, Europe, Mexico and South America — let alone the United States, Charles Lindberg, and a slew of other unusual personages. At its core, it’s a history of high finance, but Chernow’s mastery weaves what could be dry subject matter into the “movement and tension of an epic novel,” to quote the NY Times.

I must admire Chernow's resolve to research his subjects so thoroughly. This was my second go-around after Titan. These books have tremendous value as insight into the times and thoughts of the world's first Corporate Titans. However, both books, but this one in particular is tremendously difficult to read. I find myself labouring through each chapter, midway through and not enjoying the experience. I look back and have learned a great deal, but it was an incredible pain to get there.

This wasn’t my favorite of Ron Chernow’s books but it is well researched. There was more detail than I really wanted to know. I loved the other three books I read that he wrote—Hamilton, Washington, and Grant—I highly recommend those. If you want to know all about banking and JP Morgan then this book is worth reading.

a long book and a very interesting and helpful one from the aspect of understanding how world politics and events were shaped by the financial side - especially the influence of one dominant family - and a dominant person within that family. As all Chernow books, well researched and reasoned. My favorite of his: Titan - the John D. Rockefeller biography. Clearly he has a financial penchant. The book stops in the late 80's - so you can only wish for an updated view of the merger with Chase Bank and the role of the bank in the Great Recession and its current compliance problems. Ron, how about an update??

The book is fascinating and has aged well (written ±30 years ago!). The parts that cover the 19th century through about world war II are fascinating and unmissable. The latter parts towards the end of the book, seem to be written out of necessity because the book had to cover the whole history of the bank. I believe a later more experience Chernow would have had the wisdom to stop earlier and make a more compact book.As it stands, the good parts are great, for their context about how massively powerful Morgan was, and the beautiful historical anecdotes included.

The House of Morgan is an stand-out history of modern finance, told as the story of one of America's great banking families. It tells the story of the shift of the epicenter of global finance from London to New York City and should serve as a reminder to we Americans that that epicenter is not fixed and can shift again.Morgan was a powerful man. During the 1907 Panic he put NYC's bankers in a room and forced them to save the city and its banking system. A decade later it would be the federal reserve, not any banker, with that power. Even during the Great Depression, partners at J.P. Morgan made a million dollars a year. J.P. Morgan himself was shockingly cash poor (much of his wealth was in art) compared to his fellow robber barons, but those robber barons relied on him for capital, the lifeblood of all businesses. The dominance of J.P. Morgan was only broken by Glass-Steagal (this was by no means certain: FDR liked the big banks because of their internationalist bent and his fear of the power conservative small bank presidents had in small town politics). As someone who worked in banking during a youth mispent, I loved the window Chernow provides into the banking of yesteryear. J.P. Morgan was a conservative place to work, even for a banking house. In the halcyon days of the three-martini lunch, J.P. Morgan partners abstained at lunch. It was considered a career-limiting move to remove your suit jacket before entering the restroom. The House of Morgan is the first book I would suggest to anyone interest in the history of American finance and one of a few I would suggest for economic history. As in all of his books, Chernow shows off an impressive vocabulary. He uses the words correctly and fruitfully, but you may benefit from keeping a dictionary handy.

Gone: Catastrophe in Paradise by OJ Modjeska is the real story of the worst aviation accident in history. The Canary Islands, a popular tourist location for both American and European tourists in the late 1970s has just been rocked when its major airport was bombed by a separatists group seeking to gain independence from the Spanish who had been in control of the island chain for a long time. The decision was made to divert all air traffic to a small regional airport nearby when the threat of another bombing was made. An overwhelmingly large number of large planes then began to land and circle the small, understaffed, and ill equipped airport. To add to the mayhem, a thick fog rolled into the area which drastically cut down on the visibility of both the pilots and the air traffic controller. The stage was set for an easily avoidable, yet horrible accident to take place. This is the true story of that accident. There are several things that I really enjoyed about this novella. First, it is short and gets right to the heart of the issue. Many times nonfiction gets bogged down with unnecessary discussions of small details. This one sticks to the main points and keeps on going. Second, it has been well researched and presented in a way that is easy for the reader to understand, enjoy, and learn from. Third, it brings to light an accident that many in the aviation field are aware of but most average people have no knowledge of. I really like it when an author takes the time to shine a light on a small forgotten part of history and make the reader aware of its importance. Excellent read.

A word or two about the feeling that captured me while I was reading this book.It is a distinct feeling of uneasiness and powerlessness that something very bad is about to happen because hints are everywhere. It has nothing to do with the book intro I read before. I can illustrate a similar feeling creeping up when I was watching the cult horror “The Ring” - I sat at the edge on my sofa in the same position until the end. I almost went through the same process when turning the pages of this fact-packed and detailed overview of what really happened on Tenerife in 1977. I am too young to remember the real event but it is not necessary because this somber depiction of human erring and individual personalities will get to any flier, meaning - to anyone.OJ Madjeska’s writing is carried with a powerful news reporting style, but it so much more than a chronicle. The author tries to stay away from finding culprits, using the Rashomon effect to give details about the series of unfortunate mishaps that brought together the unforeseen catastrophe. Having all those ill-fated circumstances all at once, including the airport technical set up, an act of terrorism and human frailty, one could actually ask:”What can not go wrong”?In the end, sadness grips: once the pride of aircraft industry, top pilot professionals and over 500 travelers looking for the holiday of the lifetime disappear into ashes. A precious gain from such a tragedy would be, as expected, improved airline safety. And still, the author states, even 40 years later, the heterodyne effect complicates airline communication.Airlines, get to that da*n heterodyne! It seems there is a simple solution to it!

My original title for this review (but ditched, too long!): Suspenseful, yet familiar...creates a suffocating sense of coming doom for the characters, then you remember: it's a true story!I was intrigued by the "teaser" (and also the title) for this book: "One fine afternoon on a sun drenched island hundreds of lives are destroyed...a true story." I wondered: tsunami? terror attack? a case of mass, very serious failure of sunscreen resulting in the death of hundreds of beachgoers? As it turned out, after a few pages I realized I was familiar with the topic: teen memories of my parents/maternal aunt talking about it at the time, plus images of TV news that evening and the following days; and even a somewhat recent "air disaster" type program I watched on Netflix. The book concerns the "Tenerife airport disaster," still ranked as the deadliest accident in aviation history (I promise, no spoilers beyond this, and in fact the writer spells out the subject matter in the prologue).I happen to be one generation removed from Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands: my maternal grandmother was born/partly raised there (along about 1900, later she immigrated to Cuba, where I was born).Despite my familiarity with the subject, I found this book quite well executes a challenging dilemma: when the reader knows the end-result (for example, the JFK assassination or the sinking of the Titanic), how does the writer create a captivating, even suspenseful narrative?True, in this case most readers may not know the end-result, but again, the writer mentions it early on. Modjeska takes the same tack as Alfred Hitchcock famously stated as the recipe for suspense: scenario 1: diners at a table, one steps away, then suddenly a bomb explodes, all are dead save the one; or 2: first, we are shown a bomb under the table, with a clock on it ticking towards zero...then, the camera rises to diners at a table, one steps away, the camera returns under, shows us the ticking bomb again, now the timer nearer to zero, the camera rises to the diners again, the laughter, the camaraderie, etc., then suddenly the bomb explodes, all are dead save the one (suspect? lucky?), and we find we have been tightly holding onto our seat, our lover's hand, or our TV remote as the suspense built...suddenly released (fyi, this is all from memory, but accurate, save perhaps for the one diner walking away (?).Hitchcock termed the first scenario as nothing but shock and gore (as most horror/suspense movies are nowadays, so-called "slasher films")...the second scenario as the heart of suspense. This writer, who I am not directly comparing to Hitchcock (after all this story is non-fiction/ a written narrative, not a film, etc.) nonetheless manages to engage in such suspense-building.Modjeska also takes a tack that may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I found satisfying: a sense of "fate" closing in on the soon-to-be-victims: the nature of randomness, probability, small incidents, human fallibility all contributing to or even directly causing the tragedy about to unfold. In addition, the author adds layers and details I was not aware of, despite my intermittent exposure over the decades to this story; for example, a bit about the much-lauded but now gone Pan American airlines' enlightened corporate culture (advanced by the standards of the 1970s; btw, is Pan Am back? I'd heard something about it being revived, I'll have to Google that).A slim volume, for sure....a quick read....perfect for a one-sitting or two-sitting read.I look forward to more from OJ Modjeska.

#440,190 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I will give credit for accuracy on many parts but to do that with the unknown was ahorrible twist and hated it for that. It is sacred to so many and to do that or even imply that was wrong especially since zo read it on Nov 11th.

Tremendous amount of research went into the novel. History must be preserved so that one can understand how easily we forget the patterns of behavior that have shaped our lives. Personally, there was too much blood and gore and a fairly week love story underlining it all.

The tragedy of pathos of the protagonist make this book impossible to put down. The doomed love affair and inevitable consequence are an anticipated but no less compelling when you reach that part of the story. The ending may have been the best part, but i won't spoil it. Enthusiastically recommended, but you may need tissues.

The opening chapter of "Winter of the World" is incredibly sad. So sad, in fact, the reader is challenged to go on. Nonetheless, reading on is a great reward. Carol Ann Lee has captured as best a 21st century novel can the horror of the World War I battlefield and the terror of the trenches on the northern end of the Western Front. There is, of course, more than a war story in this novel. There is romance--the romantic urgency brought on by war. There are personal dilemmas tracing back to pre-war events and their own horrors. This is a very well written novel and as I read it I wondered how Carol Ann Lee could capture the emotion and the incredibly difficulty of the times and places in Northern France and Western Belgium in 1914 and 1915. She is a skillful writer and obviously a good researcher. The characters are real and identifiable as people I could know. I recommend this book to everyone who likes a good historical novel. This is book is especially poignant as the centennial of the beginning of World War I approaches.

A beauty written story of love and loss during the Great War. I was hooked from the very beginning. I actually sobbed when I learned the identity of the honored person being taken to his burial.

Did not like the ending. Confusing. Story held my interest. I read a lot of historical work. This one was just ok for me.

This is a book for lovers of historical fiction. It’s interesting, thought provoking, and a glimpse into past

cotton - good for summer or winter. Love it

John Lasseter: The Whiz Who Made Pixar King (Legends of Animation), by Jeff Lenburg

From Booklist

Lenburg, author of these titles in the Legends of Animation series, has the right credentials. He has written a number of books on animated cartoons and several biographies. These two are complete treatments of the cartoonists, their careers and characters, and their places in the ever-changing world of animation. The subject of John Lasseter is described as being like a duck in water when it comes to animation. Present at the moment when computer animation opened new vistas for those in the field, Lasseter ran with the ball (though not without a few stumbles), eventually arriving at Pixar Studios. His Toy Story brought animated films to a new level. Lenburg’s solid offerings (though sometimes a tad on the dry side) are brought down a bit by lack of publisher oversight. For instance, on p.29, the typeface is mangled, and the relative paucity of images from Pixar films makes the book somewhat unanimated. Overall, this series continues to offer plenty to excite the future animators among us. Grades 7-10. --Ilene Cooper
