I had hit a wall in terms of eating right and dieting. Then my sister shared with me how much she was able to lower her LDL in her cholesterol by reducing her sugar intake. I started to Google articles on sugar and came across Dr Lustig's You Tube video. It was 90 minutes but it was, in a word, captivating. I was then fortunate to find out that he was coming out with a book at the end of December. I had it delivered to my Kindle while on a beach vacation during the Christmas/ New Year's holidays.Well, as much as that does not sound like a good vacation book (I did read 2 other novels), it was fantastic on multiple levels. Dr Lustig has a gift because not only is he obviously educated in his field but he is articulate and extremely thorough.Specifically, his book details how sugar is bad for you but he takes it to a level where you totally get it. He explains it from angles that you have never even realized existed...politically, economically, socially and of course, scientifically. And it is not just sugar. He gets into every corner of nutrition....fiber, insulin, leptin, stress, exercise. The book covers everything. It is obvious he put a tremendous amount of effort into this book. He also states very clearly that he has scientific back-up to all of his statements.As I mentioned above, I was looking for a "new diet book" but this book is much more than that. Realizing what is going on in my body because I absolutely love and eat so many carbs was mind boggling. He teaches you all about food labels and let me tell you, it is an education. I am married over 25 years and my wife always does the food shopping. This book had such an effect on me, that I went food shopping by myself so that I could take the time and read the food labels. You cannot believe how much sugar is in your food. I am not even viewing my change in eating as a diet. This is about understanding what is going on with all of the garbage that we consume. For me, it is a change of life. The book just clicked with me.If you want to live longer( in addition to many other benefits such as losing weight), read this book cover to cover. I also love the fact that he endorses the glass of red wine I am drinking right now.

Probably saved my liver and therefore my life. It changed the way I ate, how I view food, and educated me about things I thought I knew.I have recommended this book to every patient (I'm an Optometrist) that is Diabetic or pre-diabetic or overweight, pretty much everyone.I have reread this book three times. The first time freaked me out and I didn't know what to eat. Then the second read I discovered things I didn't pick up on the first read. On the third read I took notes. I still keep it handy to check on things from time to time.

This books is well written and explains biochemistry in a way that I can understand. While I knew that white sugar, white flour, etc. were not good for me, this book convinced me to try a little harder to switch to healthier options. The one concept that impacted me most is that even before one sees changes on the scale or waistline, positive changes occur internally. For example, as the liver becomes less fatty, it functions better and that leads to other health improvements.Since we've changed our eating habits, we have more energy and my mood is better. After 2 months, I no longer even want high-sugar snacks. In fact, I surprised my husband with a store-bought pie a few weeks ago and we felt so bad after a couple of slices that we threw the rest in the trash and have not even been tempted to buy anything similar since.We are eating more healthy foods and we are losing weight and inches, but we are no longer "dieting." This is a lifestyle change and not a temporary "fix."

While fighting a carbohydrate roller coaster and watching my triglycerides go up, I was considering going to weight watchers. I heard a PBS interview with Lustig and decided to avoid refined carbs even before I was able to get the book. Within two weeks, I had lost a couple of pounds. Three months later, I had lost a solid 12 pounds by my doctor's scale. My triglycerides had declined 100 points. My cholesterol readings were within the normal range. My blood pressure had dropped thirty points. Since then I have lost another ten pounds and my glucose is usually in the normal range. All this without suffering deprivation. This book deserves to be read together with Taubes' "Good Calories, Bad Calories" and "Why We Get Fat and What to Do About it." While they overlap, they each contain information not covered by the others. In reality, the nutritional principles these authors propound are simple, but we have been so convinced by the bad science espoused by the FDA Food Pyramid that we need to have the whole picture explained. More important than the weight aspect of avoiding carbs, however, is the link of hyperinsulemia to diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, depression, and even cancer. Since these diseases are so pervasive in the United States, I think there are few people who would not benefit greatly from reading this book.

This book truly captures the Swiss essence in a respectful and appreciative way. My late stepfather was Swiss (my mom and I are Latin American, he moved to our contry when they got married) and these pages brought to life so many memories! He trying to fit in a society that doesn't plan long term and time is 'relative', our emotional way to socialize, etc. I remember my mom once asking him by the tenth time in a very flirty way (as customary here) 'Honey, do you love me?, and him looking at her with an expression of confusion all over his face, answering 'Darling, I already told you I love you this morning. I haven't changed my mind.' In the end, we learned a lot from him as well as he from us. Books like these, that can actually help you understand and appreciate a different culture faster, are really a treasure. Thanks to the author for this great work. Totally recommended.

Superbly written, great insights into the Swiss culture. Details not found in any other travel guide such as why the Swiss never drive with the car windows down. Fascinating reading.

I bought this book as a gift for a graduate student who was going to work in Switzerland for two years. However, I did look through it before giving it away, and I had done quite a bit of research on line before picking this particular item. The book seemed to me a very practical guide for someone taking up residence in Switzerland, and was not so much meant for the casual 2-week vacationer. The sections on cultural differences between the Swiss and other people were particularly interesting, and would head off some awkward moments for a new immigrant. The parts about rules for apartment living sound quite strict for someone from America, but, again, would prevent misunderstandings between Swiss and foreign tenants. There are also the more usual guidebook sections on recreation, such as hiking, skiing, eating in restaurants, etc. The student who received the book proclaimed it "great", and I think it will come in handy in the months ahead.

More of a series of extended tips for long term travelers. The ideas were however very helpful in understanding how to engage the Swiss on their terms and how to begin to navigate their milieu. An understanding of the French, German, and Italian/Mediterranean cultures are definitely helpful, since they all feed into the Swiss mix, but these cultures do not show how the Swiss are unique to any of them. A good book for those spending six months or longer in this beautiful country.

A quick read for anyone who wants a good understanding of the Swiss culture and people. Because of Switzerland's different regions and languages, the author does an excellent job of depicting how this diversity works.

This whole series is wonderful. Even if you have been to these countries......the insight is terrific, just in case you want to talk about where you have been or plan on returning.

The amazing part is how my faith, my worldview and my Chrisitanity was so radically changed by such a small book.The Bible is the original text while this book if the Cliff Notes in applying the real Christianity.I now see Jesus in the eyes of the homeless; the prisoner; the "pain in the neck" people and therefore my christian expression has changed.Do Not read this book if you do not want to change your actions toward people.

He makes no bones about the fact that neither the Communists, nor the Americans had particular care about the lives of non-combatants including his fellow reporters and that this was a war in which any collateral damage was perfectly acceptable.This highlights a very negative time in American history in which the lies we were told by our government covered up genocide, racism, and a war that forced many El Salvadorans to flee their homeland. The book was excellent, detailed and well-written. I grabbed this when it was free and would gladly recommend it event at full price.

Joe Frazier's account reflects his background as an AP correspondent. He works hard, eschews fancy prose and tells you what happened. I spent four years at the U.S. Embassy in El Salvador; Joe and I overlapped for much of the time. Now as then, he is smart, comprehensible and engaged. He is not settling scores and I do not think any unbiased observer would find his work anything but honest.If you have strong opinions and want them reinforced, there is plenty of stuff out there for you.If you want to read a fair account of a people, a country and a policy shot through with contradictions, you should buyr and read this book.

I appreciated the stories and perspective of the author, to the reader this book provided a pretty balanced understanding of the challenges of the civil war in El Salvador. The book tells the story of the war through different perspectives and stories, trying to make sense of it all. I particularly liked the chapter on Oscar Romero.The only drawback for me was the editing, there were quite a few editing and grammar mistakes, and at times there were sections that were difficult to understand because of that. Despite that, I still enjoyed the book.

Three wars later, Americans have forgotten the proxy wars that were fought in Nicaragua and El Salvador (as well as Guatemala and Honduras, by implication) throughout the 1980s and which dominated the national media. As the author reminds us, the Reagan Administration's fear of another Nicaragua, or worse, another Cuba, in Central America brought the tiny nation of El Salvador into the Cold War maelstrom. Mr. Frazier takes us back to that time not as a historian, but rather, from the perspective of a journalist who actually witnessed, reported on, and was himself victimized by this tragic conflict. While his perspective his first-hand and personal, Mr. Frazier addresses the political and social currents that the drove the conflict and how this otherwise seemingly irrelevant (from an American foreign policy perspective), tiny nation became the epicenter of perhaps the last East-West conflict. This book is essentially for anyone seeking to understand the first-hand effects of American foreign policy decision-making, particularly how those decisions played out in Latin America during the 1970s and 1980s.

I was disappointed that there wasn't more about Frazier's wife who was killed in El Salvador. I found her story to be very compelling.That said, any story about Salvadorans is always great. The Salvadoran people are generous, thoughtful & unique people; at least the poor and middle class are.If you plan to go to El Salvador, make sure you read this first!

Joe Frazier waited nearly three decades to process events he covered in Central America — including events that he personally suffered through, namely the death of his wife, Tico Times journalist Linda Frazier, at the hands of a Sandinista- commanded Argentine terrorist who blew up a press conference she was covering at La Penca in 1984. The book refreshingly lacks the blatant cheerleading for leftist forces that permeates far too many Western journalists' accounts of events in Central America that were written at the time.

I've searched long and hard for a decent book written about the recent war torn history of El Salvador and haven't found much until this book. It is a must read for anyone with even a remote interest in US foreign policy in Central America.

Very enjoyable read, with a lot of unique stories from the author's time in El Salvador. Having covered both sides of the war, his perspective is more nuanced than most accounts of the war. I only wish the book were a bit longer.
