Review

Praise for Bloody January “Alan Parks’s grisly debut novel, Bloody January, is also set in Glasgow―in the first month of 1973. Though snow is blanketing the streets, it can’t hide the corruption in a city where cops and criminals are often forced to keep each other’s secrets.”―Wall Street Journal “Bloody January has all the gritty bells and whistles expected of noir, but at the same time its main character, Detective Harry McCoy of the Glasgow Police Force, grapples with the contradictions of morality on a multitude of levels.” ―LA Review of Books “Told over the course of 20 days, Bloody January never flags in pace. Bundled with a myriad of personal flaws, Harry McCoy is an immediately compelling new character. His quest for justice (and a little measure of revenge), despite the personal cost to himself, makes for an irresistible read.”―Mystery Scene "Rich with local details and historical anecdotes from 1970s, this is a top-notch crime fiction with high likelihood of becoming part of an exciting series in the coming years.”―Mystery Tribune “...really tight writing, gripping and violent, dark and satisfying.”―Bret Easton Ellis, author of American Psycho and Less Than Zero “Parks’ debut novel has an in-your-face immediacy that matches its protagonist. Compelling portraits of minor characters tucked into several scenes add texture and interest.” ―Kirkus Reviews “[A] suitably dark and violent debut novel that resurrects the tartan noir phenomenon.”―Library Journal “An old-school cop novel written with wit and economy…Think McIlvanney or Get Carter.”―Ian Rankin, author of The Inspector Rebus series “Tautly woven...A worthy addition to the tartan noir canon, McCoy is a flawed hero to watch, as is his creator.”―Publishers Weekly “For noir connoisseurs, this will hit the spot.”―Booklist “A thrilling debut from a very promising talent.”―Ragnar Jónasson, author of The Dark Iceland series “Set in 1970s Glasgow where violence is a language everyone speaks, Bloody January is a deliciously dark read. One to be read with the lights on and the doors locked, this book is a must-have for lovers of McIlvanney and all things noir.” ―Lesley Kelly, author of A Fine House in Trinity “An authentic freefall through Glasgow’s criminal underworld from a great, intriguing new Scottish voice.” ―Jenni Fagan, author of The Panopticon “Bloody January is seriously good. It’s brilliantly evocative of the 1970s in Glasgow (and I should know as I was there!). I loved Alan Parks’ characters and I want to read a lot more of Detective Harry McCoy please!” ―Alex Gray, author of the Detective Lorimer Series “A brilliant debut. Taut, violent and as close as you’ll get to 1970s Glasgow without a TARDIS. Parks is a natural successor to William McIIvanney.” ―John Niven, author of Kill Your Friends “A blistering plot, unforgettable characters and writing so sharp it’s like it’s been written with a knife: what more could you ask? Detective McCoy is a true noir antihero and the perfect guide through the vice and violence of Glasgow’s underbelly. Bloody January firmly sets Alan Parks in the same league as Ian Rankin and Louise Welsh.” ―Sarah Pinborough, bestselling author of Behind Her Eyes “Bloody and brilliant. This smasher from Alan Parks is a reminder of how dark Glasgow used to be.” ―Louise Welsh, author of The Cutting Room Floor “A barnstormer of a crime novel that takes the police procedural and gives it a well-deserved shake. Detective Harry McCoy digs under the surface of 70s Glasgow in all its contradictory glory. Bloody January is relentless readable and so well written I couldn’t believe it was a debut.” ―Russell McLean, author of The Good Son “Parks continues to bring us hard-boiled fiction set in Glasgow in the 1970s, a town and setting that should get the noir fan sitting up straight in anticipation of some of the most brutal and beautiful prose around.”―CrimeReads “Imbued with all the grit, blood, and pervasive damp of the best Celtic crime, this series is destined to become a favorite among Adrian McKinty’s and Denise Mina’s followers.”―Booklist “‘February’s Son’ startles readers with surprises as its story strands pull together. As in his previous book, Mr. Parks dissects a city where cops and crooks depend on one another to maintain order.”―The Wall Street Journal

Parks is a significant talent. Such a picture he paints with his pitch perfect Glasgow dialog. His protagonist Harry McCoy is quick-witted, clever, imperfect, vulnerable and wonderfully engaging. And McCoy’s running buddy named – wait for it – Watson is equally entertaining. Parks is giving us inventive and profound Noir fiction. It’s violent. It’s noir. It’s addictive. It’s wonderful stuff.

This is well paced and has some great characters that you can understand and get involved with. The descriptions of Glasgow in the 70’s make you feel like you’re there and pacing is fast with some nice twists - some believeable, some not so much. All in all, a very entertaining book. The only complaint is the repetitive use of the word wee. It was a quaint touch at first, but maybe another term here or there?

February’s Son is the second book in the Harry McCoy series by British author, Alan Parks. It’s February 1973 and Harry is just back at the Glasgow Police Force after a three-week break that included compulsory visits to the Police psychologist. But straight off, DCI Murray has him at a bloody and brutal murder scene: a football star has been drugged and mutilated and left on the roof of a building under construction. The victim’s prospective father-in-law, a Glasgow crime figure, is certain it has been done by the strong arm he used to employ, but this dangerous man has gone into hiding. The fiancée seems more annoyed than in grief, and quite certain she is in no danger herself. But more disfigured bodies turn up (nasty words carved in flesh and Mandrax seem to be a common feature), and the murderer proves difficult to track down, managing to slip away from Police more than once.Harry, meanwhile, is distracted by the suicide death, in a chapel, of a destitute alcoholic. Harry seems to have a special rapport with Glasgow’s homeless, but this time, there’s something more, and soon he’s on a violent revenge mission with his criminal pal, Stevie Cooper. But Harry’s a cop: is this a line he’s crossing?Against the background of a battle for control of Glasgow’s criminal elements, this fast-paced thriller includes paedophiles, lobotomies, and a vicious psychopath, as it races towards a nail-biting climax. Several characters require stitches on multiple occasions. Harry still indulges heavily in alcohol, tobacco and drugs, and barely hesitates before using violence, but he does seem to be saving intimacies for Susan. And does his chosen career really fit well with a blood phobia? There is some good detective work achieved and young Wattie does something quite heroic. While there are no major spoilers for the first book in the series, Bloody January, and this one can stand alone, the first book does give some useful background on the characters and their history. Again, the prolific use of expletives may offend some readers, but there’s a bit of black humour in the banter. Excellent Scottish Noir. This unbiased review is from an uncorrected proof copy provided by Allen & Unwin

Bloody January from Alan Parks was one of my favourite books of 2018 and I was curious to see if the second in a planned 12 book series measured up. I'm happy to report it does.70s Glasgow, a murdered professional footballer - not just murdered but mutilated into the bargain and one with links to a heavy hitter criminal boss, Jake Scobie. Celtic player Charlie Jackson was engaged to Scobie's daughter and it looks like one of Scobie's close confidants and enforcers, Kevin Connolly has done the deed. Apparently Connolly had a thing for Elaine Scobie.Simples then - find Connolly and close the case. If only.Mental illness, a struck off doctor with a penchant for conducting lobotomies, unrequited love, a falling out of criminals, a picture in a paper, a suicide, a terminal illness, an obstructive lawyer, ghosts from the past, an escalation, a river rescue, family friction, an insider takeover (?), manipulation and scheming, more victims, a peeping Tom act, a hotel raid, a disturbing look inside a diseased mind, a kicking with the promise of more, some plans for retribution, a childhood bond, a busy reporter, a poorly mother, dabbling with drugs, revenge goes awry, an escalation, a funeral, a plan of action, a few bevvies, a few pies and some tension between old friends, shooting for the stars, a lucky escape, a guilty conscience and a tearful confession, and a helluva lot more going on here.Harsh, brutal, graphic and enlightening. There's a lot of pain in this book and a lot of ghosts that get exorcised, particularly for our main character, Harry McCoy in a story strand that runs tangentially to our main aim of capturing our very obvious villain, Kevin Connolly. All the bits and bobs of the tale overlap and entwine and eventually get wrapped up with consummate skill and very satisfactorily too.I loved the main character Harry. Parks makes us care about him and we feel his pain and the suffering the weight of his memories causes him. His casual drug use and over indulgence on occassions with alcohol is understandable and cathartic for him in many respects. That he is an honest copper mostly, is a testament to his strength and resilience. I do like the loyalty to and the interactions with childhood friend and up-and-coming major villain Stevie Cooper. I enjoy his banter with young Wattie and their partnership with Wattie feeding off the old pro McCoy and having his eyes opened to the sights and perils of big city Glasgow. I like the fact McCoy has a boss, Murray who has his back.Looking forward to book three, whenever that drops. 2020 - hurry up!4.5 from 5Read in February, 2019Published - 2019Page count - 368Source - review copy from publisher CanongateFormat - paperback

American Like Me: Reflections on Life Between Cultures, by America Ferrera

From School Library Journal

An anthology of short, personal essays by first- and second-generation immigrants or members of marginalized communities, most of whom are celebrated actors, activists, authors, and athletes. Ferrera (of Ugly Betty and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants fame) starts the collection with a breezy entry on the origins of her name and the microagressions, and even overt racism, that it has inspired over the years. Most of these pieces discuss the awkward and difficult in-between spaces the contributors have often occupied, mostly involuntarily, because of their family's country of origin or place in the majority white United States. The selections range in length and topic, touching on first crushes, holiday celebrations, intergenerational clashes, financial struggle, religious observance, and more. What unites these short works is the inherent pride in being part of "America," but also the acknowledgement that this nation often fails to live up to the promise of its founders. Teens will find lots to connect with, as many of the entries focus on childhood, coming of age, and the growing pains that accompany adolescence and identity formation. VERDICT A strong selection where anthologies and personal essay collections have a readership; a good choice for supplementing civics courses.-Shelley M. Diaz, School Library Journalα(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

I just received this book yesterday and am only a few chapters in, but I cannot put it down! As a woman who has questioned her own culture identity for years, America's introduction resonated deeply with me. With each story that follows, I continue to be engaged by the lessons, hardships and knowledge the contributors have experienced throughout their own cultural journeys here in the US. This is an eye-opening, must read!

I just got this book today and I CAN’T PUT IT DOWN! This is bringing back so many memories I had as a young girl. I identify through so many of these stories. Thank you America for having the courage to believe in yourself despite what people told you. I can’t wait to start gifting this book to people!

There isn't enough literature out there that talks about what it is like to live between two cultures. This book has a variety of different essays from entertainers, comedians, and other famous individuals on fitting into the American culture and keeping their ties to their backgrounds. Within all of the essays, there is a common theme of being proud of who you are and where you came from. Highly recommend reading, some of the essays are light and short reads.

This timely book includes key life stories of prominent contemporary Americans of different ethnic and racial backgrounds. Each personal account tells how the individual overcame the experience of "apartness" to eventually contribute to the unfolding story of American life.

It was refreshing to read the stories of so many Americans whose life experiences are so relatable to plenty of us stuck between cultures

This is a great compilation of the voices and experiences of people who are uniquely American, some very well-known. The essays are truthful, enlightening and encouraging. My main takeaways are admiration and hope for the future of our country. The struggle is worth it.

The ability to share such personal stories makes this audiobook a perfect companion

This is a collection of people's experiences in America. A lot of them are very familiar to me, as I have brown skin as well, but a ton of it was new and eye opening. This is easy to get through and will help you understand those around you more deeply. Highly recommended.

Annihilation: A Novel (The Southern Reach Trilogy), by Jeff VanderMeer

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, February 2014: There is a comfort in familiarity, a foundation from which to definitively identify and label. But Jeff VanderMeer is not interested in putting his readers at ease. With Annihilation--the first volume of The Southern Reach Trilogy--he carefully creates a yearning for answers, then boldly denies them, reminding us that being too eager to know too much can be dangerous. The story follows an expedition of four women who are known only by their professions: the Psychologist, the Surveyor, the Anthropologist, and the Biologist--nameless pawns tasked with exploring, discovering, and (hopefully) delivering data about a portentous coastal territory called Area X. We are a bit like fifth members of that team (perhaps "the Reader"), learning at the same pace, guided by the observations of our narrator, the Biologist. Still the context remains blurry as VanderMeer twists each discovery into a deeper mystery. Through potent description and unrelenting tension, he achieves a level of emotional manipulation that should appeal to anyone who embraced the paranormal phenomena and maddening uncertainties of Lost. --Robin A. Rothman

From Booklist

*Starred Review* An expedition of four women is sent into an unknown region called Area X, beyond the borders of humanity: a psychologist, a surveyor, an anthropologist, and our narrator, a biologist. The purpose of the mission is to collect data about Area X and report back to the government, the Southern Reach, but circumstances begin to change when the group discovers a tower (or tunnel) that was previously unmarked on the map. Inside the structure, strange writing scrawls across the walls, and a spiral staircase descends downward, beckoning the members to follow. Previous expeditions ended badly, with group members disappearing or returning as shells of their former selves, but little is known about what actually occurred on those trips to Area X. A gripping fantasy thriller, Annihilation is thoroughly suspenseful. In a manner similar to H. G. Wells’ in The Island of Dr. Moreau (1896), VanderMeer weaves together an otherworldly tale of the supernatural and the half-human. Delightfully, this page-turner is the first in a trilogy. --Heather Paulson

TL;DR The book is full of decent and intriguing ideas that are poorly executed. There is no character for the audience to use as an anchor. It takes 160 pages for anything resembling a story to get started. This book is a surprise and mystery if you have never read metaphysical horror before. To see what Annihilation would look like if executed flawlessly, read House of Leaves. The now-commonplace horror elements of humans encountering the utterly foreign and unknowable make up the backbone of the narrative. But whereas it is on glorious and staggering display in Lovecraft, King, amd other giants, here it is reduced to a bizarre oddity that induces head-scratching instead of spine-tingling.The primary reason for this is the clashing styles. The first 160 pages of the book are so sterile and cold that even the strangest things are as interesting as unfinished jigsaw puzzles. The main character, The Biologist, states that this is to provide an objective account of events which necessotate a subjective experience in order to terrify. The last 30 pages are forced to give up the objective description, and only then does Annihilation actually become interesting. The Biologist herself is done great injustice by the first 160 pages. In providing nothing but objective descriptions of events, the author fails to establish her as anything resembling a human being. She is nothing more than a camera lens that requires occasional flashbacks by the author to establish that she has Emotions and these are often at odds with the character as portrayed. The Biologist is a heavy introvert. She eschews people for her work. This is mentioned often and in bold fashion. Yet this person married, for reasons that are never explained beyond "he offsets my introversion". The Biologist is not portrayed as a person interested in the feelings or experiences of others. Why marry? At the end of the book the semblance of a person begins to emerge from the Biologist, but by then the narrative has established her so firmly as a non-presence that her character feels like something the author shoved in when he realized there was no point to which the audience could attach. She is a walking fight between a detached third-person objective lens and a woman who wants to tell her own story. It does not end well for either party. Finally, the book simply starts. No world-building or character history or any point of reference that would be helpful for an audience seeking a way into the story. In theory this plays along with the idea that the characters themselves know little, and are themselves poorly informed. In practice it is disorienting and dull. We know nothing about the state of the world. No baseline is established. Even the characters know more than we do, as is revealed later in the book - well past halfway in. The effect is like waking up to find yourself weightless inside an empty sphere. There is no point of reference and you can only make guesses until someone pops in and tells you what is happening. There are many more small details that add up into a large pile of errors - debunked pop psychology from 1950 paired with hard science, characters that serve no purpose and go nowhere, jarring switches between clinical observation and surrealist prose, a world that is somehow both tantalizingly alien and horribly mundane - but describing those would take much longer.Read a summary on Wikipedia. I guarantee it will be much more cohesive, interesting, and above all much less time-consuming than reading this book.

The best way to begin a review about this novel (and series) is to tell potential customers what it is NOT. I believe the most enlightening way to do this is to compare it to other prominent sci-fi works with which I feel it has some similarities (and with respect to Mr. Vandermeer many differences). This is not a series by Michael Crichton. Although at times I was reminded of various Crichton works such as the Andromeda Strain, Sphere, and even Jurassic Park, Crichton takes painstaking efforts to ground the seemingly fantastical experiences in his stories with a semblance of fictional science. Crichton essentially is a magician who shows you afterwards how the trick was performed. There is no such reveal in this book (or really the series at large). Any sort of explanation (rational or irrational) is left entirely up to the reader. This can be frustrating for many people (including myself) who become engrossed in the plot and would like a finite resolution. This is also not the book Arrival which also deals with potentially extraterrestrial beings, semiotics, and language. Whereas a linguist is the protagonist and narrator of Arrival, the linguist in Annihilation pointedly drops out of the expedition before the novel even begins. What this book is, as many others have pointed out, is similar to Lost or (in my opinion) Prometheus. The writing, especially at the start, is both exciting and compelling. However, each mystery only leads to more mysteries. The main character is interesting if not rather obtuse (as many characters in sci-fi stories are -- if the crew of the Nostromo could follow simple quarantine procedures then the film Alien may have only been 15 minutes long -- but that's beside the point). As a story, it's well written and the plot is intriguing. It borders on sci-fi horror and raises many interesting questions about the human condition. Hence the 3 stars. But the lack of exposition holds it back.

I read all three books in this trilogy. The premise was interesting but nothing came of it. Lots of character development but very little action and no resolution at the end of three volumes. I am reviewing the first volume because by the time I was certain of the lack of resolution it was too late. Stop before you start unless you enjoy interesting concepts the don’t become stories or end. They just stop.

You can also find this review on my blog Courtney's ReadsThis was so incredibly perfect. It's short, fun, sweet. Horses, July, Beck. What more could you ask for? I love these two together and seeing their relationship as it developed over the years was perfect. There's also some of the family drama that made Stay the Distance so real, beautiful horses and racing. A great little story. If you haven't read Stay the Distance yet...Do it! Right now! And then read this.

Great short story that fleshes out the characters and backstory from Stay the Distance. It was great to see July and Beck again, and I can't wait for Finding Daylight!

More Beck & July. What's not to love? Beck, especially!!

Not bad for basically in introductory short story.

I loved Stay the Distance, so any chance to get back into this story of Mara's is much appreciated. I'm so glad to have another bit of July's story.

Very amusing short story which I hope has a continuing story line in a future book. Thank you Mara your books are always excellent.

Enjoyed the back story. The three novels have some gaps and while I'm not above using my imagination to fill them, I appreciate the author's version!

Gives insight into the missing pieces of the series and how Beck and Juls were with each other. Love it.

I've always loved these Brain Quest question cards, and so does my daughter. We owned the 3-4 year old cards and my daughter loved them so much I figured I'd get these for her 4th birthday. There is a set inbetween the 3-4 and these, but I wanted her to be challenged for a little while, so we decided to go with the kindergarten set. Yes, some of the questions are a bit advanced for her, but for the most part she can do them, and she has a blast while answering them. We usually have a couple books before bed, but lately she's been wanting to do a few sets of questions instead of reading actual books, that's how much she loves them. They are a great tool to get your little one thinking.

My son turned 3 two months ago. These are a pretty good fit for him and he's enjoying them, although many of the questions strike me as "too easy" and I would think they'd be in the age 2-3 deck (such as counting & color indentification). It really depends on your child, though. Some reviews say "too hard" and some say "too easy", so it just depends. And there's nothing wrong with a little recap of things he already knows. It was a pretty good mix of challenging & easy, although only a few did I think were truly challening for his age.He loves looking through these and completed the entire first deck front & back the day we got it. It also opens up discussion and I can revise the question if I want to, or expand on it.Some of the questions are so-so ... such as identifying who is wearing "overalls". Just not a common clothing item in my opinion, but maybe it is in some regions? :) Also, I skip over the nursery rhyme questions. There are a handful of questions that give you the "wrong" lyrics to the nursery rhyme, and the child is supposed to know which part is wrong, and what the right lyrics are. Just kind of a confusing concept for this age (unless you are big into memorizing nursery rhymes). Learning or correcting words to nursery rhymes just isn't that important for us. We sing a few for fun, but I just feel like something else besides that could have been used that was more educational or practical.I liked the questions that had to do with "under" "over" "behind" etc. Those are concepts that I have not really taught him yet so it was good to see.

We love Brain Quest activity books and I grew up loving these Brain Quest card decks, but Kindergarten? Really? We got this for my 3.5 year old thinking that it would be a little challenging, but good, and he blew threw every single question with ease. He is a smart little boy, but by no means setting new childhood standards. I would say that this is a wonderful product, but suitable for the 2-3 year old age range (only some of the questions about money/telling time could be tough). Certainly a good review or confidence builder for children entering Kindergarten, too (maybe good for an early reader who can do the questions on his/her own). Will continue to purchase Brain Quest items, but will look for products several years ahead!

My son LOVES these. It's a game to him and he loves going through them and feeling that sense of accomplishment as he gets the answers right. It helps us also review some areas he is not as familiar with such as coin values, telling time, and recognizing some numbers and letters. He is 3.5 years old and has already gone through the deck that precedes this one, so I got him the 4-5 and the 5-6 year decks as well to see where he is on those levels and start exposing him to more things he is not as comfortable with.He still loves them and is doing great. I love that the presentation makes it like a game to him so it's lot laborious. He actually asks me and his dad to play the game with him. =)

I bought the pre-school (4-5) set and love the variety of questions. I think they are very are appropriate if a child has not already been in preschool for a year. For my daughter (who is turning 4 at the end of july) they are fairly easy. That being said, she has fun and it's a great tool, that keeps her thinking and boosts her confidence. I also have purchased the brainquest workbooks and find she struggles more with connecting the dots so it may be a difference in learning style where she visually learns with ease but is less tactile at this point. We take these on car rides instead of electronics.

Got this for my 3.5 year old daughter who is currently in preschool. She didn't want to stop the first night I brought it out--she was having that much fun. She even asks to do the 'game with the cards.' There were some questions she had more trouble with than others (patterns, sequences), but I'd say she aced about 85% of the questions. I immediately ordered the age 5-6 version and plan to get her started on that soon. This comes with two fan decks in the set (different questions). Very easy to put in my purse. We brought it to a relative's home and to restaurants.

I have heard and read a lot about these Brain Quest cards recently and it dawned on me that I had either the same types of cards or something similar when I was a kid and I really liked them. I have always enjoyed trivia and I'm hoping to pass that on to my five-year-old. I wanted to start with the preschool since he has not started school yet but he actually knows a lot more than I thought he would and once we are done with these I plan to get the kindergarten ones. These are really good for helping you figure out what your kid might need a little extra help with and also to surprise you with how much your kid already knows. I also feel like this is getting my son more interested in learning and going to school than before.

Love love brain quest. My 2 year old asks to "read my cards" all the time. We are now on the 4-5 year old cards. We started with the my first brain quest. We have also bought the corresponding work books. She loves to "do schoolwork" and use the stickers at the end of the books. These cards are easy to stash in the car or purse and take with you everywhere. Great to use in long lines and long drives
