A two-page introduction briefly summarizes the major conflicts that have affected the U.S., and ends with a statement regarding the costs of war and a chart of casualty figures. This is followed by 11 independent chapters, each devoted to a specific conflict, ranging from the American Revolution to the Gulf War. The longest chapters deal with the Civil War and World War II, the shortest with the Spanish-American War. Each chapter is color-coded, making access easier. A detailed index completes the volume.Chapters follow a basic format. "Prelude to War," which creates the historical setting and defines major issues, is followed by subsections presenting major developments, including first and last confrontations, pivotal incidents, campaigns, personalities, the home front, public reaction, and so on. I have the first edition of this book, and as a modeler and historian, I have to say that this is the best book on this subject for people of ANY age! There are many books on the history of warfare, but only this one emphasizes U.S. participation.

This book provides a comprehensive account of the United States Military from the birth of the country up to the present time.The text is easy to read, not like a 'stuffy' textbook, and it is well illustrated with photographs, maps and diagrams.Although intended as a school study book it provides a useful and informative reference book for anyone interested in the United States, and in particular their armed forces.

My son enjoys history and this book is one of his favorites.

How can you call it a "secret" to recommend the Sunday antiques market in San Telmo?!? Very little in this book that you won't find in the standard guidebooks. Some of the odd English phrasing seems to be straight out of Google Translate. (The following excerpt is from a review of an ice cream chain: "In all initiatives, Freddo acts on three fronts: Craftsmanship, Argentina and Dulce de Leche (the number of flavors based on this icon of Argentine cuisine, seven beyond the traditional, doesn't deny the origin of the brand).") Portions of the various sections are clearly lifted straight from other sources (the section on Tigre, which suggests "enjoy leisure time to explore the port on your own and have lunch at a local eatery (own expense)" obviously came straight out of a tour itinerary), including marketing materials for the establishment in question (see the blurb on the vegetarian restaurant). All in all, not worth your time or money.

Buenos Aires is a beautiful city with rustic glamour. I love to see it when I visit Argentina soon. Reading a book such as this excites me because I do not want to go where the tourist go. I want to be in the city and live like a local even for a week or for a month. That way, I can see the city and the sorrounding towns in a different way. Not a touristy thing to do and this book made me see that it is doable.

We planned to spend three days in Buenos Aries -- plans changed and will now be there only 30 hours before leaving on a cruise.This was a good summary of things to do -- very few "secrets" -- all were covered in my copy of Top 10 Buenos Aires (Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guide), which I just purchased.Personally, I would go with Eyewitness - we really like the photographs and the substance is broader.Robert C. I think that Pippa Grant is trying to make me look like a liar. I keep stating how much I don't really enjoy romantic comedies but each time I read one of hers I have to make an exception, and each time the books get better and better. I really thought that nothing could top my love for Knox Moretti, I mean he's a sexy romance blogger, what can be better than that? Zeus Berger. That's what. It's ironic that my initial reaction to him in the other books and upon finding out that he would get his own story was, "How could Pippa Grant possibly make me fall in love with this larger-than-life oaf who has an ego to match and probably half the IQ?" because this is exactly the reaction that Zeus is used to getting and the one thing he longs for someone to look beyond. I never expected discover the softer, smarter side of him and I definitely didn't expect to be swooning so hard over him. Of course, what could bring out the softer side of a big old brute like him better than a tough-as-nails, take no bs, successful woman?Enter Joey "Fireball" Diamonte.  I don't think I've ever met such a ballsy, badass heroine as Joey. Sure, she comes across as cold and stubborn and extremely stand-offish but this is precisely why her and Zeus are perfect for each other. They are the only two strong-willed, confident (some might say cocky) people who could possibly have the patience and will to push past each other's barriers. And boy did they make it an interesting journey!!There are a lot of books that make me smile, and even make me giggle but this one made me literally laugh out loud. #gleek #spiders I don't love romcoms that are overtly raunchy or crass simply for the sake of trying to be funny but when those things are true to who a character is and that character is well-developed beyond those characteristics, it makes all the difference. That kind of thing gets old really quick when it seems to be the only dimension to a character and their story. This is not the case with Pippa Grant's books. If you feel overwhelmed or annoyed by some of the behaviors of her characters in the beginning of the story, stick it out, I swear you won't be disappointed. Outside of all the laughs this books provides, you'll also feel. This story has heart and it's kind of embedded itself in mine.Â

Joey “Fireball” Diamonte is a woman that doesn't take crap from anyone and especially from men. She's didn't get where she is today by being some damsel in distress needing a knight in shinning armor to come rescue her. And the last thing she needs is this hulking tall drink of water.Zeus Berger is a brute on and off the ice and no woman has ever made him think about love, fairy tales, and all that jazz. The only thing that scares him are spiders and maybe his sister. But he's about to meet his match in the form of one feisty pilot.Their attraction seems unlikely but there's a pull there that neither can deny. The more the fire grows between, the less this relationship stars to feel like it's just a fling.Can they really makes this a lasting relationship or will they crash and burn faster then a jet going Mach 10?The Pilot & the Puck-Up is a fun, witty, saucy read that will have the reader laughing out loud while making knees weak and hearts swoon.Joey is definitely a fireball you can't help but fall in love with. I love all her sassy comebacks, giving as good or better as she gets. I adore her willingness to give love and Zeus a try even though she's scared.Zeus is everything you think a big, brute of a hockey player could be, but there is more than meets the eye. He's got a heart of gold and really nothing more than huge teddy bear. He's the guy that will always be there for his family and friends no matter what.The passion between Joey and Zeus ignites right from the start and only intensifies as the story progresses. I love how they both open up to each other while building a strong, long lasting relationship. Zeus may have a few false starts in the beginning, but he's not a man to walk away from a challenge and Joey is a challenge he wants to win.I love, love, love Joey and Zeus. They are fun, sexy, and completely adorable. Their journey is so entertaining from cover to cover that you won't want to put it down. Zeus will make is way under your skin and into your heart before you even know what's happening.I highly suggest that you run and pick up The Pilot & the Puck-Up and find out why readers are falling head over heals for Zeus and Joey. There may be a few bumps in the road, but Zeus will score a goal and win the game in the end.

I have been saving this book until Beauty and the Beefcake was released so In would not have to wait on Ares story! Oh Lord this was funny ! The Berger twins and the whole gang are my favorite people ever! I know they aren't technically "real" but you will understand completely when you read Pippa's amazing books. Joey and Zeus are made for each other! Do not read this while eating or drinking, and so not read this In the breakroom at work! all my coworkers think I have lost my mind when reading anything Pippa writes!! This book deserves way way more than 5 stars!!!

Zeus and Joey are a match made in a vomit comet. Poor Zeus, deep down, all he wants —- well, I’m not spilling his deepest secret, because I don’t want the behometh hockey player coming after me (because he’s that real, people)! ;-)Joey’s a tough nut. A hard-nosed pilot who’s climbed high and low and high again flying jets in her getting-off-the-ground vomit comet business, men don’t interest her. Much. One thing you have to say about Zeus is he makes a distinctive entrance into her life. Joey’s there to drum up investors in her business. Zeus is there...because.Things get crazy after that, including a ride on a gravity flight, the aforementioned vomit comet, and we meet a little girl who’s got possibly more moxie than either Joey or Zeus who frankly deserves a book or her own - or her single mother does. (Hear that, Pippa Grant? I want the kids’ mom to have a HEA too, because they deserve one!)The romance is hilarious and top-notch, with all the craziness in a PG (that’s Pippa Grant, and it’s NOT PG rated) book. So, get it, sit back, and be prepared to giggle your way through Zeus’ growing self-awareness and Joey’s crash landing into giant Zeus. Hey, any landing is a good one, even a crash one. There are now many good books on the civil rights movement, but this may well be the best. It’s a cliché to say that a book is hard to put down, but this one really is. I finished and have already started on the next volume, Pillar of Fire. It’s long, highly detailed, but the writing is superb. And Taylor Branch rarely inserts his personal views—he lets the facts speak for themselves.In 1962, after having to eventually do what he hoped to avoid and sending thousands of troops to enroll one Black, James Meredith, in "Ole Miss": "'It makes me wonder,' Kennedy said privately to Sorensen, 'whether everything I learned [in Harvard] about the evils of Reconstruction was really true.'"W.E.B. Du Bois had published his groundbreaking work Black Reconstruction in America, 1860-1880 in 1935, but the Dunning school was still almost an official version of US history, especially in schools for the ruling class. (Ignore the Stalinist-influenced nonsense about "the dictatorship of the black proletariat"; this was a bourgeois-democratic revolution).Despite racism in the labor movement, Black workers had been part of the formation of the big industrial unions (see Labor's Giant Step: The First Twenty Years of the CIO: 1936-55), and there was a significant fight against racism in the armed forces during World War II (see Fighting Racism in World War II). Some of that sentiment managed to survive through the years of the witch hunt.There were hundreds of thousands of people involved in the civil rights movement in one way or another. It destroyed Jim Crow segregation, and forever changed this country, although other forms of institutional racism will take a revolution to be wiped out. Branch discusses many of the leaders of this movement. Martin Luther King wasn’t my favorite, but he clearly was the central one. To me, civil disobedience is just a tactic, not a principle. The non-violent approach frequently limited the number of people who would participate. Unfortunately, King also had big illusions in John F. Kennedy. The Democratic Party then included most Blacks for the first time, but it also still included most segregationists. On the other hand, Malcolm X in 1964 said “Any Negro who registers as a Democrat or a Republican is a traitor to his own people.” (See By Any Means Necessary (Malcolm X Speeches and Writings) (Malcolm X speeches & writings)).Meeting with Kennedy was not wrong, but letting Kennedy dictate who King could associate with (because of FBI assertions of “Communist infiltration”) was something else. King tried to maneuver around this, but it’s not easy fooling the rulers.Kennedy, and Johnson were forced to enact civil rights legislation, not only because of the mass movement developing in this country, but because of the colonial revolution and the Cold War. The Soviet Union also oppressed minority nationalities, but Cuba was different. The US government wanted to avoid pictures of Blacks being beaten showing on TV and newspapers all over the world. They wanted to steer the civil rights movement toward voting rights, but did they really think that would be any less bloody! It obviously wasn’t.While Kennedy was willing to take the world to the brink of nuclear disaster to try to overthrow the revolutionary government of Cuba (which gave high priority to fighting racism), Malcolm X, in 1960, when he was still a member of the Nation of Islam, met with Fidel Castro in New York (see To Speak the Truth: Why Washington's 'Cold War' Against Cuba Doesn't End, and Malcolm X, Black Liberation, and the Road to Workers Power). In 1964, when Che Guevara was in New York to speak at the United Nations, Che agreed to speak at a meeting sponsored by Malcolm’s Organization of Afro-American Unity. Security concerns led to his cancelling, but he sent greetings which Malcolm X read (see Malcolm X Speaks: Selected Speeches and Statements). Branch doesn’t mention all this, but he does mention “rallies of support [for the struggle in Birmingham] as far away as Birmingham, England, and Havana, Cuba….”The civil rights movement helped inspire the next mass movement, against the Vietnam War, which King and others came to join (see Out Now: A Participant's Account of the Movement in the United States Against the Vietnam War). And both these movements helped inspire the fight of women for equal rights.For those who think that the election of Trump is because white workers who had twice voted for Obama suddenly became racist, I recommend The Clintons' Anti-Working-Class Record (Why Washington fears working people?). The working class has not become more racist; it is having second thoughts about the Democrats because of the world capitalist economic and social crisis. There were, I believe 201 counties where people who had twice voted for Obama voted for Trump. The fact that their lifespan is 20 years less than the US average seems far more relevant than their attitude toward Black people, which probably hasn’t changed.Had the Democrats run Bernie Sanders, he would likely have won. He also has no answers, but unlike Hillary Clinton, he didn’t pretend there were no problems.

Taylor Branch, in this first volume of his Civil Rights era chronicle, admirably fulfills a writer's twin duties of telling a compelling story while managing a vast amount of historical material. Covering the years 1954 to 1963, Branch takes the reader from movement's birth in the black Baptist churches of the South through the Eisenhower and Kennedy years, concluding with JFK's death and its aftermath. Every participant, man, woman, or child, famous or obscure, has his story told with a veteran reporter's eye for the truth. Branch has a way with words, as we can appreciate on virtually every page. Here are a couple of samples. The first discusses the FBI's extensive wiretapping of King and his associates:"That an intelligence agency in the belief that King was an enemy of freedom, ignorant of the reality that King had just set in motion the greatest firestorm of domestic liberty in a hundred years, was one of the saddest ironies of American history." (p 692)The other sample illustrates Branch's use of ironic humor:"Walker's [an organizer of the March on Washington] presentation was at once breathtaking and quixotic. It envisioned a precisely organized march into history by an organization that had taken four years to find a mimeograph machine." (p 690)Martin Luther King, Jr. and his movement were rooted in the church, as the titles of the three series' volumes (Parting the Waters, Pillar of Fire, At Canaan's Edge) which recall the Biblical journey of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land, make clear. And, as was true in the Bible, the heroes were also all-too-fallible human beings, petty and sinful, but ultimately victorious.Events today have their roots in the past. If you'd like to understand where we are in Civil Rights, this book genuinely earns its five stars. I look forward to reading the remaining two volumes.

At the end of 922 pages of text in Parting the Waters I felt stunned at the scope and beauty of Branch's story of the early King years; emboldened by such a moving, well-told story, shocked and horrified at details I had never known of the horrors the Freedom Riders and King suffered. This book is both haunting and inspiring. Most importantly, I wished for 922 pages more of Branch's story to read. Thankfully, it is the first in a trilogy so there is more to read. No one who cares about or wants to learn more about the Civil Rights movement can afford to miss this book.

What's the big hurry? You have the rest of your life together to work on a beautiful and intimate relationship that is so much more than merely physical.This book gave my dear husband unrealistic expectations of me, and it took me nearly two years and a different book (The Good Girl's Guide to Great Sex, by Sheila Gregoire) to reconcile myself with the way I felt on my wedding night and after. I was too inexperienced to freely challenge the ideas of the Lahayes, and thought something was wrong with me/our marriage. During that time I would even have given their book about five stars, I was that naive.Also, to the husbands of virgins--know that the less pressure she feels, the better she will respond. If you assure her that she can take all the time she needs, she will be able to relax and to feel secure in your love. These two things are a big turn-on for women!There is much wisdom and practical advice in this book. It is not demeaning to women as some claim. There is much emphasis on female satisfaction. For that I give it three stars. I just wish they would rewrite the chapter on the wedding night---- and that they wouldn't tell people who cheated on their spouse that they don't have to confess to their spouse as long as they've repented! (Yes, really!)

Painstakingly organized and cleverly thorough. This book reached me on so many levels. Not only does it explain the importance of sex in marriage, but it explains in detail how to be ultimately satisfied in love-making, both man and woman. If this book were the standard for sex education, I think we would have an almost zero divorce rate as well as overwhelming reduction of crime in our world (as love loss sometimes drives people to do things they wouldn't normally do). As a divorcee, I find that, with prayer, it has completely freed me from the guilt and negative mind-set that comes with the sin of previous divorce. I have married couples in mind to whom I would like to recommend this book. I would jump at the chance to recommend it to couples who are getting married. I wish I knew about this book 20 years ago! I think it would have helped me see clearly to the right life partner.

I bought about half a dozen of the best rated most popular christian sex books. This being one of them,I expected it to be good but it was ok. Overall too graphic, too how to.. (who can't figure that out?) It is possible there are newly wed couples out there who really don't know human anatomy in 2018 so I guess it would be good for them. I do suggest reading Love your husband, love yourself by Jennifer Flanders. She does an excellent job on this one, she talks about why it's important, the benefits, and the blessing that come with having sex with your husband and often!

This book helps. It treats sex on the levels of physical, mental, spiritual -- speaks of things that affect (for better or worse) a sexual relationship. However, this book goes beyond "newbie" level, and speaks of things that anybody may be missing from their relationship, keeping it from running smoothly. This book is written from a Christian perspective, and by BOTH a man and his wife, so you get both perspectives.

I borrowed "Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask" from my friend but found some things to be offensive and vulgar. I began praying about the situation because I loved my husband and knew this was a need of his. I found the Act of Marriage at a Christian bookstore and as I thumbed through the pages, it really opened my eyes about some things. I can honestly say it changed our sex life in amazing ways. We have now been married 32 years and our sex life is very satisfying. I have given this book as a wedding gift to many couples. I don't want them to have to wait 17 years to get this information!My husband is a pastor and we often counsel other couples. The "Act of Marriage" is one of the two books we often recommend. The other book is "His Needs, Her Needs" by Willard Harley.One word of caution. In the older versions of this book, the LaHayes expressed that there were cases when they felt abortion was permissible. I strongly disagreed with them. They have since changed their perspective on that.
