I love the art in this and the activities are great in theory. however my kiddos got frustrated at not being able to find many of the nature hunt items since they are not prevalent in our area a more extensive search list would be helpful. Also this book is a one time use if you choose to write and draw in it and if you have two kiddos that like to color their own pages that requires two copies.

I was quite excited when I saw The Third Day by Alex Webb-Peploe come up for review. Especially right at Easter time! I liken it to a comic book but that doesn't really do it justice! It is so much better than a comic book! My kids have The Action Bible which is a comic representation of the Bible, but the pictures in this are more true to the graphic nature of the story. The Third Day is based on Luke 22-24 which is how Jesus was crucified.I was excited because I knew my boys would love this! And I couldn't wait to dig in to share the story of Easter in a visual way with them that they could understand. The graphics are amazing. And it takes it straight from the Word of God. My boys really loved the way the graphics brought it to life for them!The authors and illustrators did a fantastic job of brining God's redemption to life as told by Luke. I definitely recommend this edition for any teen, tween and in between! Some of it is graphic so I would review it first to determine if you would like younger children to view it. I let all of mine look at it. (Ages 16 down to 6). Overall, fantastic job! My only downfall is the cover. It does NOT display what is inside these detailed and fantastic pages!I received this book for free to review for the publisher through Cross Focused Reviews. All opinions are my own and I was not required to give a positive review.

Teenagers and young adults read. Physics, chemistry, history, The Grapes of Wrath, economics. You name it. They are told to read it. And, for the most part, they do read (if they want to graduate high school or college!). Academic reading is a pathway to adulthood. You just have to do it.So if you have ever ministered to students, then you know it is a challenge to get them to read the Bible, much less enjoy it. I can't tell you how many times I have heard a student (high school or college) say to me, "I don't have time to read the Bible because I have so much homework and I have to read x-amount of pages before Friday." I get it. I use to be there. But we can't be content this. If you don't read your American history textbook, you may be clueless about the Boston Tea Party. If you don't read your Genesis or Romans, you will be clueless about matters of eternal significance.So the question comes up, "How do we get young people to read the Bible?" My answer is that we must start small and do our best to make the Bible exciting, compelling, dramatic, yet at the same time faithfully represent of the actual words of God. For many of us, we immediately think that this applies to teaching the Bible with words (in youth group, summer camps, etc.). That is good and helpful, but what if it meant actually illustrating the Bible graphically? You know, providing some teeth to the biblical story in a way that might resonate with a teen. Alex Webb-Peploe and André Parker have done just that with a new graphic novel titled The Third Day.The Third Day is, what the authors call, a "graphic realization" of the Bible. It's not a "comic book" (read here to learn the difference). The book tells the story of Luke 22-24, which traces Jesus' last hours before his crucifixion and resurrection. The story begins with Judas' deal to betray Jesus and ends, as the Gospel of Luke does, with Jesus' resurrection and ascension. The novel uses the complete text of Luke 22-24 from the Holman Christian Standard Bible. No one can argue that the book is a compromise of the Holy Scriptures because it used the "worldly medium" of graphic novel. The words are the exact words Luke wrote down, only beautifully represented with graphics.Now about that graphic representation. It's superb. It's gritty, raw, and dark---far removed from the sanitized representations in Sunday School material or Hollywood movies. Jesus and his disciples look like the rag-tag bunch the Gospels make them out to be. The scenes, most prominently people's faces, draw out the pain, anger, heartache, fear, brokenness, sadness, and unspeakable joy of the narrative's tone. The Third Day brings the Passion narrative to life with a punch. It's a refreshing reminder that the gospel, though timeless, actually happened in a specific historic context at a certain point in time.One particular scene that was helpful for me was after Jesus shared the Passover meal and the disciples argued about who is the greatest. The authors depicted the "dispute that arose among them" as a physical confrontation, in which one disciple grabs the shirt of another (imagine grabbing someone to throw them up against the wall) as they stand nose-to-nose. In the West a "dispute" is usually done across a boardroom table with a Starbucks in hand. I can't know if the art represents reality, but it makes me stop, think, and reconsider my assumptions of the text. That's what good art, not to mention preaching and teaching, is supposed to do.I highly recommend The Third Day for young people who find the story of Jesus (or the church's modern re-telling of it) boring, uninspiring, or unrealistic. If you're a parent or a youth minister, get a copy (or many copies) and give them away. My hope is that God will use this graphic novel, and others like it, to help young people to take Scriptures and the gospel story within it seriously.

I love the story of Christ. His life, His death, His resurrection, His ascension. And as such, I never tire of hearing or reading it. I love to read it in His word, I love to hear it preached in pulpits. I enjoy watching movies and plays on the subject as well. And now, I even like the comic book version.The Good Book Company with artists Alex Webb-Peploe and Andre Parker have put together a high-quality, meaningful comic book that chronicles the last 3 days of the life of Christ, with words taken directly from Luke’s Gospel. The intensity is there, the message is there, the passion is there, and most of all, the victory is there.When my copy arrived in the mail, immediately my 10 and 12 year old boys wanted to take a peek. Knowing that I was planning on doing a review, I let them have it for a couple of days to see what reaction I would get from the targeted demographic. And they really got a kick out of it. Maybe I have been blessed to have been saved at such a young age that I have practically created my own mental images of how the events may have gone down, that I for one, don’t really need a comic book to convey the message. But my boys sure enjoyed it. And if I understand the aim of the publishers, that is the goal.With that experience in mind, I recommend the comic book for kids probably 8-13. For the fact that they publishers didn’t fluff the images with make-believe dialogue, but rather 100% of the text comes directly from the Scriptures, I can recommend it for all.By way of disclosure, a copy of this book was provided to me by the publisher in return for an honest evaluation, which I have provided.

While it sounds like an obvious gimmick (dropping an F-bomb in the title of a self-help book in order to show how "edgy" it is) Mark Manson's "The Subtle Art..." is a very well-written, deeply thought-out take on the perils of modern living. We can only care about so much, Manson posits, and most of us tend to waste that limited reservoir of "giving a f---" on the trivial, mundane, and shallow. How much better, then, would our lives be if we reserved that energy and focus for the things that truly matter?Exactly how to achieve that focus forms the core of this book, and Manson offers several strategies to help you integrate that aim into your own life. As with all such books, the precise mechanics are left to the reader, but the principles here are sound and workable. It's difficult to escape the conclusion that the author is right: in a world where people care about such trivia as the winner of a TV show or the latest celebrity gossip, many of us need to adjust our priorities and ask ourselves just what, exactly, is worth caring about. This book is a great place to start. Highly recommended.

A great read. A very entertaining romp through philosophical thought by a skilled wordsmith, but I would say the age cut-off for this book is 50. Beyond 50, you've probably already learned most of the lessons in this book the hard way, however, I can see where it can be extremely helpful for a generation that spends most of its waking hours posting narcissistic selfies on their iphones. Manson gives you the blueprints to get your head out of your ass, (or out of your phone) take a hard look at yourself and the real world around you, and shed many of the illusions you've been slowly poisoning your life with. If you're a millennial, or even a disenchanted X-gen, pick up this book. It will give you at least a more healthy point of view. But, if you're over 50, you're not going to find anything new in here except entertainment.

I've read quite a few "self-help" books in the last 30 or so years, always curious to see what the writers have to contribute. I went in with an open mind, but could barely finish this book. While there were some good points made early on (such as, we should concentrate on things that matter, like family and friends), there was little substance in about 150 pages of this 200 page book. Mr. Manson describes in detail the thoughts of several deceased persons, from Beatles drummer Pete Best to a WWII Japanese soldier, but does not reference the sources of his information. He theorizes that many of women's accusations of sexual misconduct by men are "false memories" and that men have been harmed in the process without recognizing the impact of this very real phenomenon of sexual misconduct on our culture. Regarding his account of how sometimes his wife "doesn't look great", and he suggests she change her clothes/hairstyle....just, wow. We'll see how that works out when she attains some confidence.I have to think that his "wildly popular" blog is followed primarily by readers much younger than Mr. Manson. When his followers mature, I think the writer would be well-suited for a job in search engine optimization. He has figured out that the most commonly searched word is f *ck.Unfortunately, I bought a hard copy of the book -- will likely just throw in the trash.

As someone who has given far too many f***s about far too many things their entire life, this book was exactly the wake up call I needed. Even as a child in elementary school, I would have a miniature meltdown when I got a bad grade or if a friend was mean to me that day. As an adult, I got better at hiding these emotional upheavals and intense reactions to the world around me, but they never really went away with my maturity like I had hoped. I took to heart every disheartening news article I read and every crappy thing that happened to me at work or in school. This book has empowered me to exercise control over my reactions.Shortly after reading this book, my husband commented at how "zen" I've become. I'm no longer angrily venting to him about all of the various ways the world upsets me. I still allow myself to feel and talk about things that bother me (I'm not aiming to achieve nirvana as a Buddhist monk), but petty things no longer have a hold on me. I let the negativity wash over me now without letting it absorb into my soul, and my life has been much more enjoyable as a result.I was so inspired by this book and its philosophy, that I wanted a permanent reminder for myself to further ensure that I use my f***s wisely from now onward. For my birthday, I got this simple, but meaningful tattoo on my right wrist. The ∞ symbol reminds me of the infinite nature of time and outer space, and the 0 on the bottom represents humanity's relevance to time and space as a whole. It can also be translated as don't make something (∞) out of nothing (0) or a reminder that there are infinite opportunities to give a f***, but that I will remain steadfast in giving 0 f***s about things that don't really matter.If you're the type of person who's struggled to keep their temper in line or if you're like me and you find yourself on an emotional roller-coaster because you take every event in the world and within your own life to heart, I strongly encourage you to read this book. If profanity is so much of a problem for you, that you can't tolerate reading the first half of this book (the last half is much less profane) you're probably too narrow-minded to have taken away any of the many philosophical benefits this book offers.

Thomas is 14 and this review consists of his comments to me about what he read. It took him a couple of days to read, which is about 4 hours total because he “powered through it” to use his terms.Thomas’s comments after reading through Cold-Case Christianity for Kids.1. The graphics were good, helpful, and well-done.2. All the captions from the figures are quotes from the text – emphasizing the main points.3. The logical arguments were presented in a way that ANYONE would understand them.4. The book used real-world examples, which helped.5. There are some fill-in-the-blank portions for kids to write in answers from their reading.6. We make conclusions everyday using logic. This book uses this same logic to show that God is the most reasonable conclusion to a) a universe that began to exist, b) a finely-tuned universe, c) big moral truths, and d) information in DNA. (page 50).7. It was a nice read.8. It will entertain kids, but it would be best if an adult read it with them.As a parent, I was very pleased that this book sparked some good conversations. But this happens a lot in our house with my involvement with Ratio Christi.**But if conversations on the truthfulness of Christianity are rare in your house, get this book.**Read through it with your kids. Honestly I wasn't sure what to expect initially. The words "Cold-Case" in the book title almost makes you feel slightly overwhelmed. Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised once I opened to the first few pages. First of all the style of writing is really comfortable (easy) to read and follow. It flows. I even read it outloud because I liked the uniqueness of the book.Immediately you're placed into the story as a kid who is about to become a student police cadet alongside your two friends at the local police department for their new detective training academy. Through your participation, you learn some valuable things that will help you become your own detective.The very first thing you learn in the academy is that to solve cases, you need to use your brain.In chapter 1 you learn about presupposition and how you cannot solve cases with your mind already made up. We have to remind our children to always be open minded. Through taking observations, making lists of evidence and explanations, we can start to see our children determine for themselves what is true and what is not.What I really liked was the fact that there are illustrations, and prompts on every single page that definitely helps to keep the reader and listener engaged. I never once felt bored when reading from this particular book and neither did my children when I read it to them. There was always a question or CSI Assignment that needed to be answered through paying attention and research. Homework if you will. Great way to get those Bibles out and research verses and asking related questions.Overall, what a great interactive guide for children and families. It makes researching truths a lot more fun! What I am taking from the investigating was that you have to teach a child to find their own truth in their beliefs, so they can teach others to believe in them too. I read the adult version of this book and was impressed, but when I saw this version for kids, I was really intrigued. After reading the book myself, I purchased copies to give to each of the older children in my church. They loved it so much that between Sunday school and church, we didn't hear a peep out of them because they were so busy reading! One boy even told me that this is the best book he has ever read!The material in the book is really well-done. It alternates between searching for the owner of a found skateboard and the search for the truth about Jesus, using the lessons learned from the skateboard case to the case about Jesus. It encourages readers to decide for themselves what to think about the truth about Jesus.This book has really good points, not the often watered down material given to children. Thus, when a friend from Taiwan announced that her resolution this year is to find God, I offered her Cold Case Christianity, but she chose the children's version because her English is not as fluent. And reading this book helped me to reinforce the key points of the original book.

My 9 year old as been questioning his faith and this answered so many of his questions and then some. Love the format of the mystery. At times it seemed he was more interested in the skateboard mystery, but by the end I realized he had really absorbed the apologetics. Didn't really care much about the printouts and video links, but some others might really enjoy those. I will say, the website is not very easy to maneuver. There's no place to easily print off all the activity sheets at once, so you have to go through each chapters webpage. Clunky.

I've been looking to educated myself of our history and historical events. As a past collegiate athlete I felt this was great educational read.Easy read.

50th anniversary edition for my 50th year of existence...I was not disappointed to say the least. The Muhammad Ali piece was gravy!

A very interesting read about african american sports athletes and their experiences. Starting in the 1970, Black Athletes have been criticized for taking social injustices and bringing it to the forefront. A very interesting and informative read.
