Review
"Fr. Naim Ateek offers the reader a profound, nonviolent approach to confronting the injustice suffered by some of the world's most poor and marginalized peoples-- the Palestinians. May this book bring about the longed-for justice!" --Mary Grey, Professor Emerita, University of Wales, Lampeter"Naim Ateek writes with the integrity of a participant-observer.... He offers a fresh analysis of the challenges to which Palestinian Liberation Theology is an answer, and provides some helpful new ways of framing the unresolved conflict between Palestine and Israel." --Very Revd Gregory C. Jenks, Dean of Grafton, and former Dean of St George s College, Jerusalem"In this book we hear the scream and the whisper of the poor, the sounds of death in the Occupied Territories, but also the whisper of life, resisting and offering hope for all of us." --Nancy Cardoso, Palestine and Israel Ecumenical Forum of the World Council of Churches

In language that is accessible to non-specialists, Rev. Naim Ateek delves into the Scriptures, tracing the development of Biblical religion from its early tribal and territorial beginnings to its full flowering as faith in God's all-inclusive love embracing all people without discrimination for or against anyone. The book's principal focus, clearly demonstrated, is the interface between these Biblical insights, on the one hand, and the current situation in Palestine and Israel, on the other. This book offers a Christ-centered approach to relieving the intolerable misery and hatred that plague the Holy Land. An added bonus is the descriptive chapter on organizations that are striving to bring lasting peace with security and equal rights for all the residents of the land.
Rev. Naim Ateek explains Palestinian liberation theology. Jesus was a Palestinian living under the oppression of the Romans. By using the hermeneutic of Jesus Christ, we are able to discern which sayings of the Old Testament represent an exclusive vengeful God and those that represent the loving God. We understand that criticisms of the exclusive God were made by later theological writers of the Old Testament. We can practice a healing, justice-making, and peaceful, inclusive, non-violent path to resolving the Palestine-Israel conflict that is not based in hate of the Other. We can realize a Jerusalem that belongs to God and is open to all, as spoken about in the words of Ezekiel and other prophetic writers in the Old Testament. Our God is the loving God of all humans. We are all human beings; we are all welcomed as the children of God through God’s love, and we are all in need of justice, peace, and reconciliation. We can work together in respect regardless of a difference in religions.
Helpful historical context to a complex issue which plagues us today. The book is certainly written from a Palestinian viewpoint but tries to maintain some balance.
