Fr Barron wrote an extremely thought-provoking book. I had a very hard time putting it down because it was so well-written. The "Eucharist" is well-researched from a theological and historical perspective from the 1st century to present day catholicism. It made me proud to be a Catholic and provided me with much insight that was personally satisfying, inspirational and helpful in my discussions with others. I would highly recommend it to others whether they are new to the catholic faith or someone like me looking for a deeper insight into my life-long journey as a Catholic. I guess it could also be helpful to anyone wanting to understand why Catholics put so much emphasis on Eucharist as a core concept to our faith.
The video that accompanies this book is amazing. It's just Father Barron doing what he does best, teaching people about the faith. This is a concise, highly informative, and the most complete examination of the Eucharist I've ever encountered. Catholics and non-Catholics alike can learn a lot from either the book or the movie. Whether you call it the Eucharist, Consecrated Host, Lord's Supper, Communion, or the Lamb's Feast, you will learn so much about the history of Christ's gift of this sacrament that you never knew before. Father Barron really brings home the meaning of the meaning of the Eucharist in a way that will renew your faith.
First, I want to disclose that I am not a Roman Catholic, but a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. I found this book facinating, insightful, and deeply enriching. Aside from the actual "how" Jesus becomes really present in the elements of bread and wine, (and the author treats the views of Luther vs. Thomas Aquinas very respectfully) there is nothing that I felt was contrary to Lutheran teaching. In a small volume, the themes of sacred meal, sacrifice and real presence were treated on such a profound and faith affirming level. In addition, the discussions of biblical texts offered many new insights and symbolism that I had not been aware of, such as the image of the mother hen gathering her chicks as not only an image of love and care, which I had recognized, but as taking part in sacrificial imagery as well. I really enjoyed the discussion of the power of words, and how God speaks things into being and how that relates to Jesus' words at the last supper transforming bread and wine into his body and blood. My son was recently confirmed in the Lutheran Church, and one of the questions he had to answer was what gifts does God provide to us in the Lord's supper? The answer is eternal life, forgiveness of sins and salvation. I though this book did a tremendous job of demonstrating how those gifts flow because of the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Finally, the discussion gave me hope that on this aspect of theology, which is really of central importance to the faith, Lutheran and Roman Catholic unity may not be far off.
A wonderful work on the Eucharist - divided into three key sections: (1) The banquet meal with God, (2) Sacrifice, and (3) The real presence. The author uses wonderful analogies, authoritative quotes, and set up a very clear, logical apology/explanation of the Eucharist.I used this book to help Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to better understand the Eucharist. While they found it beneficial, many struggled with the vocabulary. I found it to be a very easy read but I have a Masters in Theology and I am an ordained deacon. This is also an excellent book for Catholics to share with other Christians that do not understand the Mass or our belief in the Eucharist.
I haven't had the opportunity to actual do much reading of this one just yet. But it has arrived in good shape and is waiting for me to sit down with it. I have enjoyed the authors other books and video's so I am looking forward to reading this one. As a Catechist and a former Director I love Bishop Robert Barron's works. Plus I am proud that he is from Chicago like myself.
Those who left Christ thinking in a human sence , instead of a spiritual sence, when he said to eat his flesh and drink his blood, its hard to understand , this book helps make clear what is ment.
Beautiful explication of the precious gift of Eucharist. Bishop Barron's deep spirituality and personal faith provide an awesome backdrop as he transforms his masterful grasp of Scripture and the revered place of Eucharist instituted by Christ at the Last Supper, into a vibrant, compelling and easy-to-read treatise on Eucharist as sacred meal, sacrifice and real presence of Jesus today. Thank you, Bishop Barron. Once again, you've knocked it out of the park!!
As a lifelong Catholic I have read tons of books on various aspects of the Eucharist, but few pleased me as this one does. Father Barron's sound theology is illuminated by a thought-provoking analogy with the movie Babette's Feast and his pleasantly conversational writing style makes difficult and profound truths much easier to face. Rather than write a dry exposition of Eucharistic doctrine and theology he permits his readers to glimpse the real love affair that is the Eucharist.
