The market is currently crammed with the popular hybrid, the historical mystery and most do either the mystery or the history well. There are some notable exceptions and The Anatomy of Ghosts is one of those exceptions. Andrew Taylor, a prolific author of British mysteries, both period and contemporary, deserves far more attention on this side of the Atlantic.John Holdsworth, a book expert, lost his son to a freak accident and his wife to despair. He then lost his business and his home and he seeks only to expiate the guilt he feels over both deaths. Before her death, his wife was taken in by a spiritualist charlatan who claimed to be receiving messages from his dead son and passing them on to his wife, a confidence game that so angers Holdsworth that he writes and publishes a pamphlet decrying the reality of ghosts. Until that is, he becomes haunted himself.Holdsworth's pamphlet brings him to the attention of Lady Anne Oldershaw, whose son claims to have seen the ghost of a recently deceased Cambridge woman and has had a nervous breakdown because of the visitation. Lady Anne hires Holdsworth to go to Cambridge and Jerusalem college, help her son, discover the mystery of the ghost and set all of the mysteries to rest, eventually bringing her son home to her. Holdsworth, whose last friend in the world is tiring of him as a houseguest, agrees and goes to Cambridge.Once there he discovers many mysteries surrounding the breakdown of Frank Oldershaw. All of the mysteries are interesting and well developed and all of the mysteries help illustrate the period of the Enlightenment in England both physically and intellectually. Included is a secret college club, those hotbeds of power and debauchery and the power machinations in a closed university setting and town. And everyone, everyone is haunted by the dead, even those that doubt. There are references to violence here, including the off-hand rapes of children and prostitutes by the university students. Characterizations and the period setting are strong. The writing is literary without being pretentious. Four stars rather than five as the momentum of the mystery does slow in the middle of the book in favor of the historical setting, but still well worth reading and I will actively seek other works by this author. Recommended for readers of historicals and mysteries.
Anatomy is exactly what my title says it is, a good gripping period mystery. It's set in Cambridge University in the 1780's.While there is a fair amount of talk about ghosts and the lead character is the author of a treatise on the nonexistence of ghosts, there are none in the novel. This is not a spoiler. It's fairly obvious from the beginning , there aren't going to be any supernatural doings here.Decadent rich people are up to various forms of sorted debauchery and there is a murder. The lead character winds up functioning as a kind of detective and he does figure out what's going on in a deeply rotten Cambridge.I'm not a big whodunnit fan but I enjoyed trying to figure it out and I admit I didn't guess who dunnit. The author does lay on the bodily functions a little too heavily. Also there are various depictions of sexual acts and feelings that were gratuitous and rather boring. To my surprise , he also flirts with a little border line bodice ripping romance.None of which spoils this solid page turner.
18th century Cambridge College, a ghost, a secret(ish) society, a murder mystery (or two???), a young man driven mad by a secret, and a WHOLE myriad of other twists make this book really special!! 5 stars!! âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸
I picked up the Anatomy of Ghosts for a quick read and found myself wanting to experience further adventures with the main character. The author, Andrew Taylor, has done an incredible job of putting the reader into a world of the late 1700's set in Cambridge. The main character, John Holdsworth, is an out of work book seller who is hired by a rich heir to investigate the recent issues with her son. Her son was committed to a mental institution for "seeing" a ghost but much more is afoot. Holdsworth is thrown into the very sheltered world at Cambridge and encounters a variety of strange happenings. There was nothing predictable in this story for me as it was set in a place and time I knew nothing about. It was a great read and i will be looking for other titles ffromthe Author.
Murder, intrigue, and love at the fictitious Jerusalem College in the 19th century: the whodunit is much less important than the characters, their relationships, and the academic setting. Very absorbing, although not too many surprises.
Other reviewers posted this was predictable, but I found it not quite predictable in that sense. I enjoyed the period detail. I would like to see a continuation of the characters in another book, but am not holding out for it.
Great book a real good read one of the best books on ghost yet. I love it so much it is my favoret
The review does not let you know that there is female violence. Bought and had to return and lose 5.00!!!!!!!
