This absorbing book is written by two people who between them have worked for 20 years in aid agencies in Afghanistan. They criticise the post-war policies imposed by the US state. Even the UN Secretary-General decries `premature elections' and `cosmetic democracies'. Security in Afghanistan is now worse than for years. Opposition to the US/UN occupation is growing.The US-dominated World Bank insisted that all Afghanistan's pre-1979 debts be paid. The Bank says privatisation is the answer to government inefficiency and corruption, so they privatised the inefficiency and corruption! They even privatised the health service, despite the universal failures of health markets.Privatisation means governments spending our money to prop up private companies. Across the world, the evidence proves that privatisation grows private fortunes, not public services or economies, and that market liberalisation destroys societies and states.Nor is foreign aid the answer. In 2003, the US state allocated $1.6 billion for rebuilding Afghanistan, but most went to outside, mostly US, `consultants'. Only 10% resulted in finished projects. 83% of a $150 million Asian Development Bank loan for roads, power and gas went to foreign contractors. By 2002, 350 Non-Governmental Organisations, up from 46 in 1999, were competing for foreign aid funds.The authors rightly describe as `hopelessly idealistic' their own proposal that "the various international players [ugh!] have to leave their own agendas behind and start concentrating on Afghanistan." The UN's failures in Kosovo, East Timor and now Afghanistan prove that the failures are systemic: UN intervention is part of the problem. The authors' contradictory ideal of `participatory intervention' mirrors Blair's imperial claim of `humanitarian intervention'.The authors are right to say, "Fundamentally it is not donor money that Afghanistan needs but a working economy." But how? Not through the `new form of international engagement' that they suggest.The Afghan people need to get the foreign occupiers out so that they can freely decide their own future. But the authors, good little empire-building missionaries that they are, argue that withdrawal would be premature, always premature. Countries need sovereignty, not foreign patronage, democracy not foreign despotism.

Wonderful book that offers steps for making John Sarno's insights, as well as Dr. Brady's own additional insights, into a powerful practice. He outlines the path he took to arrive at his understanding of mindbody pain, he discusses the personality types and traits involved in making someone likely to develop mindbody pain syndromes, and then he outlines a form of journaling practice that can offer relief. There's much more, but for my part, that is the heart of the book, and it can work amazingly well. It did for me.It's basically a way of feeling your feelings instead of stuffing them, recognizing your anger and expressing it (in the journal only - no recommendations about telling off your boss or anything like that), and thereby unloading some of the emotional burdens that your body is carrying. For me, my physical pain had been multiplying over a period of years - first one Achilles tendon, then both, and then over time, both knees, both hips, shoulders, neck and back. I started using this process and the pain receded to a mild version of the original Achilles tendonitis. (You haven't lived until you've ordered a sharp new pain in your shoulder to go away, and it does!) And I have to mention, at the risk of sounding like I'm overselling, that I have ADD, and it did actually help my executive functioning (i.e., it was easier to simply do the things I needed to do, rather than fighting, and sometimes losing, a frustrating inner war).Speaking of overselling, I think the title was a mistake (publisher's idea?). This process addresses mindbody pain, not every kind of pain. And it's not really for life - my guess is that it's for as long as you continue to recognize your own emotions.The process outlined in this book can work wonderfully well for people who have enough of the (very common) personality traits that tend to lead to repressing strong emotions (the book deals chiefly with anger) - things like people-pleasing, fearfulness, compulsive niceness, the need to be liked, to be approved of, and even to be right. If any of that sounds like you, and you're in pain and prepared to consider that your emotions might be even partially involved, try this book. Try this book.

I liked this because it was from a Christian perspective and gave step by step directions. I wish the Christian part hadn’t been so watered down. Prayer and knowing Jesus isn’t mad at my emotions and it’s fine to feel them has been instrumental in my healing with Dr Sarno’s work, and I would have preffered for this book to be stronger in that direction. In that respect, I got more out of The Rest of the Gospel than this book.

I recommend this book to people all the time and have purchased several copies. As in all things, if people are not willing to do the work and follow the program which involves journaling, they may not have the same level of results. I was turned on to this book by a friend who was healed/set free/made whole from fibromyalgia based on the principles she learned (and used) from this book. I find that some will, some won't, some do, some don't.

This book speaks the truth on chronic pain. It was an invaluable resource on my journey of overcoming physical pain, which as it turns out, was rooted in hidden stress. I especially like Dr. Brady's detailed descriptions of the pain-prone personalities.I also highly recommend Dr. Sarno's books The Mindbody Prescription and Healing Back Pain. The Great Pain Deception by Steven Ozanich is also a very helpful guide on the path to recovery.

While being simplistic and over the top at times, his message is a good one. I would recommend this book to most people. It has helped me manage a lot of my pain and I am only a few weeks into the program. The basic idea of journaling through emotions is so simple it is profound. I can't think of a single person who would not benefit from this method of inner reflection. I've only experienced growth and a developing self-awareness from this insightful approach to health. It makes sense- we can develop ulcers from worrying, migraines from stress- why not chronic pain from never dealing with our emotions?The only concerns I have are in Brady's 'yelling' at the unconscious. I don't think that barreling over your interior life after ignoring it for so long is going to make for a long-term healthy balance between emotions and will. There are better ways to handling the blocks that one comes to in this program.

My back and body pain of 15 years was healed from this system. I can't recommend it enough!! I would at least recommend buying it and reading it to understand how your mind impacts your body. Dr. Brady is a highly regarded pain physician in Florida and has run a pain institute for Florida Hospital as well as running their CentraCare urgent care clinics.

This is a good, unbiased book about the U.S. government. I appreciated that it had no real agenda, other than education. I would have liked a bit more depth, but overall, I liked this book.

I have bought several of these books to prepare for visiting other countries, and they are always spot on. If you enjoy knowing a bit of background before you travel, and don't want to be an ugly tourist, check these books. This one, on Laos, was a wealth of information on customs and beliefs. My trip was more enjoyable for having read it.

Lots of great information. Author covers all the necessary areas to help understand the Lao people and culture. Minimize culture shock by reading this book before you come to Laos

Everything important has yet been said in the synopsis written by very expert amazon people.For every real traveller going to a foreign country, especially an exotic one, the CultureShock Book is a real Must-Read.This series is a precious adviser on almost everything a "Stranger in a Strange Land" has to know... and then to live in the country that we enter.Especially in the Asian countries where the "Face" and its very easy loss because of misbehaviour, mostly unwilling - these books are a real well of knowledge.The most important informations are often in the "Religion" department - the most obvious are: No Shoes on Temple Grounds, the Right Dress Code for Men and Women, Women have to Stay Away from the Monks, the Donations etc...)So I can only confirm: the Culture Shock Book about Laos has been very, but very very helpful for me on my voyages.The "lessons" are very entertaining too, there are language hints, there is a Traveller's Quiz at the end, and history, mostly a very dry department, is also not too boring :)Like I said: A very Must-Read for every responsable and interested traveller!PS: I have my first edition of the CultureShock Laos of 1997 - 208 pages - now there are 320! And reading both books parallel was very interesting because of the changing in so many departments :)

This book is really well written! I've been waiting for this book to be released and started reading it as soon as I got it. If you're a Chloe Fan, Dance Mom fan or just want a great read I'd suggest this book. Awesome job Chloe! You've done an amazing job on your first book. Chloe Lukasiak is inspiring! Even at her young age of 15 (when she wrote this book), she reminds us that hard work and determination can take you far in life and on the dance floor. The book is written in a very engaging manner that will appeal to tweens, teens and adults. In this book Chloe gives sound advice on how to handle bullying by kids and adults, finding support and inspiration to achieve your dreams and never giving up. I enjoyed the many personal and behind the scenes of Dance Mom's photos, her poetry and her writing style filled with humor. I plan on purchasing more copies for others in my family. I hope Chloe Lukasiak continues writing. For a young lady of now 16, her life experiences give her wisdom well beyond her years.

These days, it is so refreshing to read an intelligent, well-written book from someone like Chloe, a little girl who grew up on TV and is known all over the world yet balances her celebrity life with an everyday life grounded in good values and thoughtfulness. Even with a ghostwriter, Chloe's voice and warm excitement shine through. While there are parts about the fun, fashion, travel, and red carpet events, it's more like she's invited you home to meet the family. I loved reading about her time filming Dance Moms, especially the heart-warming stories about the other girls. Beautifully designed and illustrated, containing super-rare photos, and absolutely overflowing with love and gratitude toward her family, friends and fans, this book shows her joy in life and appreciation for the opportunities she has to make a difference in the world.

What a great read from an even greater human being. This young lady really has overcome some interesting challenges, unique to the industry she's in, along with being surrounded by awesome people who've kept her completely grounded.She's done a great job on capturing Chloe'isms, which only she can do, and sharing snippets into her life.Grab a copy for yourself and for all of the young ladies in your life. Totally worth it.

This book reflects what we as fans already knew. That Chloe is a talented mature kind young woman who is well beyond her years. She is so humble and grateful and brimming with love for all those who have been less fortunate in this world , it’s amazing. The book is a fast read and a wondersful uplifting piece of writing for young people who struggle with being comfortable in their own skin.

I received the book today, and couldn’t put it down! It’s absolutely uplifting, filled with tidbits of life stories, photos, doodles, and lots of “Chloe” advice. It’s a book I plan to reorder for other family members!.

I have followed this young lady since she started Dance Moms. I was very upset when she was forced to leave before the show ended. As it turned out it was the best thing that happened to her because she has grown into a very intelligent and beautiful young lady. Most of all she is a great role model for all young people. They say people are born with an older soul, meaning they are wise beyond their years. I totally think Chloe is one of those people. Her ideas and ways of dealing with life are very much older than any of her age. I am most inspired by her ability to overcome her shyness to become a very outspoken person for good things. I really would have to write a book to say all the things I respect about Chole but for now, I would suggest buying this book for your kids and grandkids and hope and pray they turn out like her. Credit is given to Mark and Christi Lukasiak for being such great parents and supporting her all the way. I will be very interested to see the path Chloe takes in life.

My girl is an avid reader and she did not enjoy this. She won’t finish it.

A voracious reader I discovered Ted Kerasote through the now legendary eyes of his dog Merle in MERLE'S DOOR in July of 2007. Easily bored, I have never read any book more than once but must confess in 1 1/2 years I have read Merle 4 times.....and I know I will read it again one day. OUT THERE was Ted Kerasote living my husband's fantasy and I finding myself wanting to experience the same adventure. Ted Kerasote unzips himself down the middle and bares his feelings in his writing from the depths of his soul. It is magical. He is easily the best author wrting today and anyone who misses any of his books has missed a part of a life most of only dream about. All of Ted Kerasote's books are must reads.

Kerasote has a way with words that transcends simply being informative to actually entertaining his reader. He is not afraid to look inside his own skull and poke around in there exploring the little nooks and crannies that many folks would not expose to the light of day. In that approach he gives the reader keen insight into what makes him tick. And those impulses turn out to be present in our own minds also. He makes us see how being unique does not prevent us from being an integral part of the larger picture as well.

Great book but way too short; it is only 160 pages and it is a small book, not very many words on a page, unlike Merle's Door and Pukka's Promise which are both 360 plus pages and a larger format (bigger pages). Finished it in under 3 hours. Ted Kerasote is a great writer and his descriptions of events and animals and places are delightful, but this book left me wanting more even though the trip he was describing was only two weeks long.

If you enjoy Ted Kerasote for Merle's Door and Pukka, the Pup after Merle, you may think he writes mainly about his experiences with dogs. However,his ability to transport you to the Northern reaches of this continent is very real. He takes you on a canoe trip through the wilds of the Canadian Nowthwest Territories along the Horton River. This book will hold your interest and stir your enthusiasm for traveling in the wild. He provides verbal glimpses of wildlife along the way, as well as trials and joys inherent in such a trip. If you are intrigued by travel in rough, you will love this book.

As an elderly female I have never been a "real" outdoors person. Hate camping, never downhill skiied. So why do I love to read the books of Mr. K? Because he is one of the most lyrical writers I know of. He can make the most mundane activity interesting. And his ruminations on life and living are priceless. To say nothing of all that one can learn from him. I hope it is an Amazon typo that they have the hardcover priced at $99. Don't think many would sell at that price.

Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of Ted Kerasote. This is a short book about his experience out on the Horton River with his friend who brings a remote phone. I felt like I was out there with him experiencing the beauty and surprises along the way. Ted has a great writing style that allows his readers to laugh along with him and also feel his uneasiness when talking on the remote phone while he is out in the wild. Returning back to civilization was hard and I felt disappointed that the trip ended but I believe that was the point, to know the actual difference.I would also highly recommend any of his other books especially Merle's Door. It is truly my favorite. Also, Ted has a couple books coming out in 2010 and I can hardly wait. He is personable, knowledgeable, and a gentle spirit that offers his wonderful perspective so that we may explore and learn to be in harmony with nature.

Great read! The only problem about reading Ted Keraote's books is that he can't write more books fast enough! I've read them all... and this is one of my favorites. Highly recommend it.
